The only way you can know how it did NOT start is by knowing how it DID start.

Not having an answer as to how something DID happen, doesn't mean there is proof that it had to be the other thing.

I've mentioned several times, that people use religion or the belief in a deity (or collection of deities) to explain things they don't understand. The origin of the universe and everything in it being one of them.

At one point it was commonly held belief in some cultures that the sun was apollo riding his chariot across the sky. Now we know for a fact that the sun isn't actually a God riding a chariot across the sky ... but somehow still hold on to a belief that a God is still responsible for it being there.

At one point they thought rough seas were a God getting angry. They thought lightning came from Zeus. Over time, all of those events have been explained.

Just because we still don't have answers for some things now doesn't mean it's proof that it had to have come from a God.
