I made the same mistake with my kids my parents made with me...I thought higher education was the begin and end all! All it got me was a pair of over educated elitists neither of which is very happy in their profession. My wife has outlawed all political discussions at our house.
My music degree helped me for 10 years...then I had to take a couple of years worth of classes when I got into golf to get my superintendent's qualification.....my wife's brother who has an engineering degree from va tech says a college degree now just shows a prospective employer that one has the sticktoitiveness (new word) to learn a job
We have all been trained for decades to teach our kids that without a 4 year college degree they would spend their lives digging ditches. I like Mike Rowe's perspective on that, that high school guidance counselors and parents should also tell their kids to consider a trade school instead of amassing huge student loan debt to get a degree that doesn't mean Jack Squat in the job market.
Perfect example of that is one of my nephews who studied at Marshall for 5 years pursuing a PHD in history. He now sells cell phones for a living and 20 years later is still paying off his student loans.

a friend and teammate of my nephew grew up in a family of welders so naturally he followed suit. 2 years ago when he graduated high school after taking every welding related class he could at the vo tech he left for either nebraska or oklahoma and a job making 36 bucks an hour...screw college
