No true Mountaineer would do many of the things he has already done.
VT can have him. Bringing Rich back is not worth the drama it would cause. Besides, his teams play just as bad defense as Dana's maybe worse.
His offenses would score allot more points than Dana'a would. The last time Rich faced a Big 12 team they scored 59 points

If RR and WVU do have any mutual interest in each other, we'll find out soon once and for all. If RR wants to be back @ WVU, he's just been given a perfect opportunity with VT to leverage himself back into Morgantown. If he's not hired after this season, I don't think we'll ever see him here again.
Lyons has the perfect scenario in front of him to bring back RR. If he doesn't, and instead hires a flop, that will look very poorly on our AD. Especially if RR decides to hook up with Whit Babcock and VT.
If I'm Lyons right now, I hire RR. If he doesn't work out, he can just fire him and move on to the next guy like we were planning to do after Dana anyhow. I think if you pass, you end up either regretting or playing the what-if game in perpetuity.

I agree with your scenario. No matter what Lyons does, he is going to have doubters and people hating it. If he chooses NOT to bring Rich Rod back, and he does go to VT and has any success, and since we are renewing our series with them and we will face him, and our THEN head coach is a flop, Lyons will not survive the heat. However, if he bring Rich Rod back, gives him 3-4 years to rebuild us, and he's unsuccessful, then he can fire him and we are back to where we are right now.
To me, the safest thing to do is bring Rich Rod back.
Another problem with bringing Rich back is you still need someone to run the defense. I don't want Casteel coaching here in any capacity. The 335 needs to be scrapped all together, it doesn't work for us with Gibby and it's not working for Zona. Good QBs eat this defense alive, and power running teams can gash it.

Good chance that by the bowl season Rich Rod will not be coaching Arizona as he will have taken another job somewhere else (either with us, VT, Miami, Virginia, or South Carolina).
PLUS, what makes you think we will win 3 more games and get bowl eligible? I can see a good scenario where we finish the season 1-8 in the conference. Iowa State looked very good against Texas. Texas has looked great against Oklahoma. TT can score at will. K-State has our number. And then you have Kansas......BUT we lost to them once as well.
At least RR fielded rugged, mean defenses...even if they weren't all that good. We've been soft. Maybe a culture change would make a difference.
Dick is 5-4 and has 3 games left he will lose most likely. Given his past vs each of those schools & coaches, he'll be fortunate to get 1 more win. Btw that 5-4 is vs a SOS of 66 according to Sagarin's.

2. Dick would be at a school I can't stand probably the 2nd most (behind Maryland, I don't count urban city schools that rent a pro stadium).
3. There would be a chance I could bribe the mountaineer to put a sabot in the muzzleloader and shoot the Dick provided he had not been fired or moved on before our game in 2017.

So if you were searching for a new coach you'd only evaluate them on this current season?
I think it's more his attachment to Jeff Casteel, similar to Deforest with Dana. It's frustrating how certain coaches can have unwavering loyalty to poor coaches, even when they are hurting the program.
Id evaluate him on his entire career. I'd include what did he do at meat chicken?, how did he leave that school he called his dream job?, and at his current job, just which coaches did he beat and which coaches might has well scheduled Arizona for Homecoming cause they never lost to him?
I mean that is how I'd do it.

I don't think a bowl appearance is a gimme. I said the off chance they go to the Cactus, which is the bottom BXII bowl. That could likely be a destination though for Ariz.
Yeah Oregon with Mark Helfrick, which is not Chip Kelly Oregon. Talk about hot seat, Helfrick will be on it next season.
Using your logic, WVU should abandon the Air Raid offense because it sure isn't working for WVU. The 3-3-5 defense is doing a lot better than the offense, which dumps a lot of its problems on the WVU defense (short field, few points, more pressure, etc.).
Oregon was 12-2 and 13-2 those years, 4 total loses, 50% by the hands of RR.
Let me tell you my friend..................a true Mountaineer would never leave the state in the middle of the night. I know a true Mountaineer when I see one..............and RR ain't one! The gold is in the hills of Arizona.. Hail, RR built a house out in them thar hills that is probably werf about $15 or $20 Million. He and lovely Rita like it that way. If Virginia Tech comes knocking on RR and Rita's door.............they better have the key to the bank with them!
I don't think Babcock wants RR and I don't think that Lyons wants him. After Arizona, you are likely to see him as an assistant coach at some weak program.

Poca High School may have an opening for him. They've been struggling the past few years. He could build a mansion out Muddy Gut. It's the swanky part of Heizer Creek. There's a beauty shop with tanning beds at the mouth of the holler for Miss Rita.
I am a Hokie and our damn fan base is so ignorant that they actually Do Not want Foster. They say he can't recruit! LOL. Some of these fools want Stinespring..the former OC who failed miserably and is now the TEs coach. Everything I'm hearing is..........

That's what the die hard Hokies down here has been telling me was happening this year, that Beamer was retiring and RichRod was going to Blacksburg. I've been preparing to laugh at them for a long time.
I hope that Rod goes to VT just for the drama of it all. I know that ... ahem .... "true fans" and "real West Virginians" would be on the warpath if Rod goes to VT. But that would be fun to watch.
