He had someone else's players against Clemson. Those guys were taught character and perseverance before he got there.
The better question is why Clemson rebounded so good after that loss. They fired the DC, and hired someone experienced. Then won a NC. WVU has slithered into a, well,...........
We put 56 on a NC CFP team and lost. We still have the same DC.

We played a great game that night against Clemson.
That season we got creamed by Syracuse, lost to Louisville at home then barely beat Cincinnati, Pitt and USF.
WVU V USF: 30-27
WVU V PITT: 21-20
WVU V CINCI: 24-21
That season we went over 40 points 4 times...norfolk state, bowling green, UCONN, Rutgers. We broke 50 twice, Norfolk and bowling green.
We were not a dominant team.
