Why might Holgorsen consider that move?
Holgorsen’s current deal with West Virginia has three years and $11.5 million remaining. Given that and his status as a successful Power 5 head coach, Holgorsen’s pay would likely be near the top of the Group of 5 ranks.
The former UH, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State assistant would also return to one of the best recruiting areas in the country after years of competing with schools in talent-richer areas than West Virginia. Additionally, 2019 was already setting up to be a transition year at WVU, given QB Will Grier’s departure.
Sources confirmed to SB Nation that no deal is currently in place for Applewhite’s replacement and that the school planned to contact multiple coaches, not just Holgorsen.

DH is going to be like Mike Gottfried was many years ago. Every time there was a coaching vacancy, Gottfried's agent would say that his client is interested in hope that someday somebody might take the bait.
This story is coming from Houston. And your description of Gottfried describes about 90% of coaches.
People at Cougar High are claiming they haven't made a decision yet on Major Applewhite.

Cougar High has some deep pocket alums that could make this happen.
But will need to subsidize UH Athletic Department until they bring in more money...
UH to the PAC 12 could possibly happen but a 14th team will be needed and I do not see a possible candidate but rumor is that there is interest on both sides.

The Athletic is not located in Houston nor is SB nation.
What is being reported out of Houston is that Major Applewhite is on the hot seat.
This was known on the 22nd when the chancellor at UH called out Major Applewhite .
This same chancellor said 10-2 is expected and they fire coaches for 8-4.
