West Virginia Football: Stop blaming Dana Holgorsen when something goes wrong

West Virginia football took a beating Saturday, losing to the Missouri Tigers 38-7. Without fail, fans blamed former head coach Dana Holgorsen. Stop it.

Whether you like Dana Holgorsen or not, he is the second-winningest head coach in WVU football history. He won 61 career games with the Mountaineers and twice led them to 10-win campaigns. Holgorsen was a habitual over-achiever at West Virginia.

He also had the second longest coaching tenure in WVU football history. The three prior coaches had higher winning percentages than him as well.

It seems like 50 years ago since Wvu beat Clemson in the orange bowl. What did Dabo and Dana learn from that experience. Both made staff changes after the game. Dabo went out and hired his christian buddies. Dana went out and hired his drinking Buddies. Look how things turned out.

How'd it turn out? Holgorsen finished as the second winningest coach in WVU history. 2 ten win seasons. There haven't been that many of those in Morgantown. A BCS bowl win. Conference championship.

Navigated WVU into the very difficult BIG 12 and elevated WVU to be in third and fourth position in that conference by the end. Defeated programs like Texas multiple times, narrowly lost to Alabama. Beat everyone in the BIG 12 but OU. Won several games against highly ranked programs.

All with some of the worst facilities in the conference and distant location from most recruits and especially conference schools.

His winning avg was pretty much the avg for WVU for the history of the school. People making statements like " he had one of the longest tenures" leave out he had ONE season more than i.e. Rodriguez, but also played a tougher schedule.

People are acting as though he went 2-10 every year. Total mischaracterization of reality.

Rodriguez had one less year but also a downgraded conference

Bowden and Corum had two fewer seasons but 19 and 32 fewer wins

Holgorsen was one of the best ever at WVU.

Dude, not that it bothers me or anything, everyone has their thing, but are you sexually or emotionally attracted or otherwise drawn to Dana Holgerson in ways most of us would just not understand? It’s ok with me, but on the surface it appears there is something deeper than football. No pun intended.

He also had the second longest coaching tenure in WVU football history. The three prior coaches had higher winning percentages than him as well.
Did you ever wonder why we traditionally have short coaching tenures?

For the what seems like 100 times nobody here is hating on Holgorsen. They're hating on the OP who is obsessed with Holgs and judges Brown after 2 games. He hates Brown and wants him fired.

Phil Poling has 20+ profiles, Why?
Holgorsen had nothing to do with WVU going to Big 12.
Holgorsen competitive yes. Finish on a high, NO.
Haven't seen anyone complaining about players leaving except the dumbass OP.

If Mountaineer fans are truly going to buy in to first-year head coach Neal Brown, they’ll need to #TrustTheClimb. That means letting go of whatever ill-will they have toward Holgorsen.

OP should take this advice himself. Considering OP is the only dumbass to make these threads.

..he wasn’t the one to bail after blowing the biggest game in program history against the school’s biggest rival — that was Rich Rodriguez.

Really biggest games and bolt...Take a look again.
Conference on the line....Lost to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma then sucked at Bowl game against Syracuse.

Kenny Robinson academic fraud...
Marcus Simms academic fraud...

OP is pointing to show his love Holgs and hatred for Brown didn't read the whole story. The fake writer said Brilliant Neal Brown.

...they’ll never fully appreciate what lies ahead with their brilliant new head coach Neal Brown.

A sign of a good leader is when things go right when they are away. 2019 is left with a pile of Pitt.

Tougher schedule and lost a majority of those. He fed off bottom feeders.

More years than Rod but only 1 extra win. Not to mention Rod had 5 years of 11 game regular seasons. The 12 games did not start until 2006.

Holgorsen the legend..
2011 / 10-3 (5-2) (couldn't win Big East out right) Won OB over Clemson
2012 / 7-6 (4-5) Lost Pinstripe to Syracuse
2013 / 4-8 (2-7)
2014 / 7-6 (5-4) Lost Liberty Bowl to Texas A&M
2015 / 8-5 (4-5) Won Cactus Bowl over 6-6 ASU
2016 / 10-3 (7-2) Lost Russell Athletic Bowl to Miami
2017 / 7-6 (5-4) Lost Heart Of Dalls Bowl to 6-6 Utah
2018 / 8-4 (6-3) Lost Camping World Bowl to Syracuse

Bucky get it through your fat head nobody gives a shit about your boy crush for Holgorsen. He's not here anymore. You want him go cheer for Houston. Better yet post this shit on 247 board.

I will admit I was a fan of Dana. Not to fan boy level, but definitely a fan. I, like Ollie said in his introduction, view him as one of the very best offensive minds in the game at any level. Guys like Bill Belichick don't pick the brains of fools. I kinda liked his I can go on a 3 day bender stroll into my office in flip flops with a massive hangover and in short order come up with a game plan that will still put 30 on your ass persona. The media liked him and he, his offense and his hair kept us in the national conversation. I liked it. That said I always knew he had a major flaw. He is just not good at adulting.

From the casino incidents, non typical coaching work ethic, hiring his drinking buddies, car wrecks with coeds in car, etc etc. The guy is just not built to run a program long term. OC or DC yes Head man no. Good example was the Maryland debacle in 2013. A good friend's daughter was a waitress at Keglers at the time. Dana, Dawson and several assistants the night before MD game, may have been the Thursday night before they left for MD, are in Keglers until 2:30 in the morning getting blasted drunk. To the point they staggered out with Dawson needing assistance to walk. Not what you are looking for in a leader. There were rumors of many other incidents like that, but that one i know for sure is factual.

Dana put very little effort into Bowl games the last 4-5 years if ever. It was evident in how his teams looked with regards to preparation and their performance. I could site a bunch of rumors about our Bowl prep, but I think most of us have already heard them.

Dana has stated several times he does not enjoy recruiting. No crime in that with the exception it is key to long term success. Can't sustain a program on transfers and Juco's. He got very lucky with several transfer QB's as we know he was unable to recruit even one HS QB that he was able to develop into even a solid backup.

So you have this brilliant OC who under the surface is pretty much a mess who does not think he needs to put in the long hours most coaches do, does not really enjoy most of the HC duties and responsibilities, does not like to recruit and has a lifestyle that does not promote stability.

Again, I ignored a lot of his short comings because one, his offenses were often a joy to watch and 2, he and his persona kept us in the national conversation most years at least until Nov anyway. I also am pretty clear on WVU's overall fit and the obstacles we face in the big picture of college football. I also knew a HC change would be painful. Like 3-4 years painful. The shortcomings he had in prep and recruiting were not going to bode well for a new coach. That said when we crapped the bed vs Ok. St. last year and could not get to the Big 12 title game with that squad, I was ready for the change even if it meant a 3 year rebuild. Dana and his program here had run its course IMHO.

We now seem to have the opposite of Dana at least personally at the helm. He has in 6 months taken more responsibility for his kids and program than Dana did his whole tenure. He appears to be a good CEO type coach and seems buttoned up in all areas. He was for sure on my personal short list as soon as Dana resigned.

Will this change work, who knows. Anybody who thinks they know either way is fooling themselves. Overall talent looks pretty suspect and I see zero real impact players at the moment. Have not been able to say that in quite some time. Most likely a big factor in Dana leaving/lack of extension from Lyons.

I am rooting for Brown to rebuild the program and have a team and group of coaches we can be very proud of in a couple years. Fingers crossed he can at least make us respectable while he rebuilds from the ground up. I think he will do it. In the mean time, for gosh sakes can we block somebody in that run game. Geez oh flip. Good luck Coach Brown.

This part made me laugh out loud.

"Dana has stated several times he does not enjoy recruiting. No crime in that with the exception it is key to long term success."

And the same know nothing morons still bashing the second winningest coach in WVU history are celebrating a 7 pt win over JMU and a degrading blowout to a lower kevel sec program that just lost to Wyoming.

They are celebrating WVU falling from a top ten offense to #123 out of 130.

Celebrating the top returning RB corps in the BIG 12 reduced to last place in the major college ranks.

WVU fans? Nah, WVU haters yes-- just here to troll WVU and shoot down anything to make WVU better be it an AD, coach, players or actual fans.

Here's the thing. Dana is gone and isn't coming back. No matter how many cherry picking stats you throw out, no matter how much you bitch and whine, he is not coming back. Neal Brown is now our coach. So, either get behind him and support the program or get out of here and go support Houston. Oh, and study this gif until you fully comprehend and understand how to apply it to your life...
