Gee says playoff expansion is on 'life support'

In late June, it was announced that the College Football Playoff board was prepared to make a shift to expand the four-team College Football Playoff field to 12 teams. When this potential move was announced, there was wide support for expanding the playoff.

But now, Gee says it is on “life support.”

“I think it is on life support now,” Gee said. “I have one of the votes and I think it nearly needs to be unanimous and I’m not voting for it. I think the Big Ten will not vote for it and the Pac 12 will probably not vote for it either.”

“It’s one of those ideas that I think was very good when there was stability. When there's instability, the idea becomes less appropriate.”

The joke would be on Oklahoma, if the CFP were not expanded. The Sooners' path to the CFP would be blocked by the big elephant in the room more often than not.
And that's what OU and UT were counting on along with the SEC--they waited until everyone agrees on an expanded playoff all the while working behind the scenes to make sure the playoff deck is stacked solely in their favor.

I think the contract will expire now and it will go to open bidding. They may not do 12 teams going forward.

I didn't mention Texas because the Pronghorns haven't sniffed a CFP berth as a member of the Big 12, and won't likely do so in the SEC, either. Texas A&M may have screwed Oklahoma (and Texas, if UT ever returns to prominence) royally by letting the proverbial cat out of the bag about realignment before the number of CFP invitations had been increased from four to 12.

When all the smoke clears it will be expanded. Its more money for the big boys in the big 10 and the remaining power 5 outside the sec.

You're undoubtedly correct, OlegeezEER, but my suspicion is that the non-SEC Power 5 conferences will attempt to limit the CFP to four schools in the near term, so that the SEC will not be able to tell Clemson, etc. that joining the SEC is a win-win, as not only will the new SEC addition(s) make more money, but they'll also still have a good chance to make the CFP field.

The problem is, will it be enough extra money to offset the advantage given to the SEC? I'd be willing to bet any playoff expansion proposal will have to limit the number of teams per conference to get the other leagues to agree.

Likely limits to how many from one conference and there probably won't be 12 and it will likely move to multi network operation rather than just controlled by one network.

Probably will change from 12 to 8. Limit it to only 2 are allowed from 1 conference.

The system will always favor the rich but a 12 team playoff would benefit the blue bloods of any conference. If the big 10 is having a year where psu mich and osu are highly competitive all 3 will go. If Fsu regains form and Clemson stays on its current pedestal they will go. Same with usc and maybe Oregon out in the pac. No matter what the number is there will always be someone complaining. When the basketball tourney was at 64 teams number 65 was complaining now that were at 68 team 69 is the whiner. It will never end regardless of what its expanded to.

That wasn't my point. My question is do the benefits of expansion outweigh the advantages given to the SEC? Just a cursory look at the CFP rankings suggests the the SEC will get the most benefit by far from the proposed format.

Team 69 should have won their conference tournament or scheduled tougher teams. They have no right to bitch.

Expanding the playoff benefits everyone its more money for everyone. The sec will be the the greatest beneficiary but that will be the case no matter what is done.

playoffs expansion-
Benefits the B10 and the SEC specifically, because those b10 & SEC members will get more money from additional participants.

Don't automatically think
bigger is better in all cases.

ESPN is bleeding Money, mostly because of the failure of the Longhorn Network.

ESPN would have to charge more for broadcasting rights, also.

The mystery will be if Fox Sports, NBC & CBS wants to participate
in this debacle.

Gordon Gee is correct, from a West Virginia perspective.

What a mess.

The money wouldn't be worth it to basically hand control of college football to the SEC. All formats aren't the greatest beneficiary to the SEC. The 4 team format has benefited the ACC, specifically Clemson, the most by far.

The rules will always benefit the rich. Nothing has changed in that department.

Yep...

West Virginia is very fortunate,
and has spent our money wisely.

B12 is probably our only option -
the new B12.

The SEC thought they were in control. Now, they will not be. Their money/power grab may backfire spectacularly.

Only two states outside of the SEC footprint produced players
N Carolina who is pretty much in the SEC footprint
California who the SEC feels comfortable with

B1G has won 3 NC in the Big 3 since 2000
1 in basketball
2 in football
0 in baseball

They still are in control. The alliance is all for show it has no teeth. There was a day when only 2 got a shot. Then it was expanded to 4 which is better than 2 . Giving 12 a shot will be better than 4. If the networks want 12 they will get 12. They are the ones handing out the money. If you want a real alliance put it in writing. Hand shake deals are a joke.

ABSOLUTELY. JUST GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS DOOR THEN IT'S UP TO YOU TO DO YOUR THING OR NOT WHINE ABOUT IT.

So, now the data mining pr1ck who pretended to root for Benedict Longhorn is now a a shill for the SEC? LMAO!

The playoffs aren't expanding anytime soon, when it does the playoff won't be stacked to let in SEC schools, there will be more bidders, OOC matchups will be harder to get. Not sure what part of that looks like "the SEC is in control".

They are in control of the SEC and nothing more.

It is the truth…

Not too hard to accept the truth.

More than that you see the direction the SEC is heading
B1G has one chance. That is to hold onto California but USC wasn’t interested in the conference
But USC has a huge target on their chest and ESPN/SEC don’t care about them anymore

Texas plays a role…If Sark and Kiffin have big years
Frustrating as a SC fan to be stuck with Helton
Especially when you have the NFL with a beautiful new stadium
Going to see the Rams or Raiders at SoFi

USC announced a game with LSU right after the “Alliance” was announced
Alliance has no substance whatsoever

They along with the big 10 run the show. Don't bet on the playoffs not expanding. If they want it to happen it will. Texas and Oklahoma went to the sec because that's were the money is. You think if wvu or any other remaining member was offered a spot in the sec they would turn it down.

The only role that Texas plays is as Oklahoma's prison sissy. It's hilarious to watch you spin like a top. You obviously root for WVU, but are so ashamed of this for some reason that you've pretended to root for Texas, and now you're pounding your ancient frail chest about the $EC. I laugh at frauds every day, and you're the biggest one of all. Nobody believes anything that you say, so you should revert to posting at 1:00-4:00 a.m. when you and your other 30+ handles are able to "talk" to each other without interruption or challenge.

:joy:

What is this guy talking about
Who you support or don’t doesn’t change the truth

Do you understand that.
Pretty simple. What I am saying is 100% unbiased

SEC is by far superior to the B1G
B1G isn’t doing anything to change this except trying to create an Alliance to make their fans feel better
But this Alliance has no substance.

Not supporting the SEC.
Admitting the facts at hand

1) Way more talent
2) Way more $$$$ now
3) More championships in the Big 3 sports
4) Schools with larger names now

B1G really has to change what they have been doing
Isn’t working. Should have given Texas everything they wanted.
Couldn’t because they have a parasite in that conference that is killing it

The Big 12 has lost its two biggest money makers, including the only school to ever sniff a CFP berth, and has never won a CFP game, but ol' TrollVanZandt and his merry band of 30+ profiles is pounding his ancient chest about the $EC, and bashing the biggest money making conference in America...LOLOLOLOLOL Divert and deflect...lather, rinse, repeat. This isn't an $EC board, and you're not an $EC fan.

Too busy worrying about narratives on a message board…

Anyone who is smart understands what is said on here doesn’t really matter
But others who are too slow allow words to deep dick their minds. It is a waste of their time

More than that…
You actually cannot even admit the B1G isn’t anywhere close to the SEC
Especially now. B1G is pretty much a midmajor compared to the SEC

The playoffs may expand but it wont resemble what was set up before, and it wont happen until the current deal ends. Likely to be limits on participation from one league. There could also be scheduling components- ie if you just play conference games it hurts your score. Also since just one network wont control rights, rankings wont be controlled by that network as now.

Hopefully once the BIG 12 is reconstituted the alliance will grow.

😂😂😂
The Alliance was pushed so the schools in the Big 12 realized they better get out of the conference
Find someway to catch on with a Power Conference

Only one thing that came out of the Alliance
Big 12 is no longer considered a power conference
Do you understand that.
At the end of the day ESPN has more power with those schools than FOX
So the Alliance has benefited the SEC as of now
Why you saw right after the announcement USC agree to play LSU
Dealing with people who can’t think
