Report: Houston "considering" going after Dana Holgorsen

ByAustin Nivison

There aren’t too many instances, if any, in college football of Power Five head coaches willingly leaving their school for a Group of Five job. Coaches will take the step down after getting fired or getting forced out, but you almost never see a coach with decent job security make the move to a smaller program. Despite that, it sounds like Houston is considering going after West Virginia if it fires
Major Applewhite.

Football Scoop cites wealthy Houston booster Tilman Fertitta as the reason that Holgorsen may move from Morgantown to Houston. Holgorsen was the offensive coordinator for the Cougars under Sumlin, and he apparently developed a friendship with Fertitta. Since then, Holgorsen has compiled a 61-41 record in eight seasons with the Mountaineers. The booster has already shown a willingness to open up his bank account to help the football program. Look no further than the $20 million Fertitta coughed up to build The Fertitta center. If he wants Holgorsen, it’s fair to think he’d be willing to fund the hire, at least in part.

Let’s hope so. Dana is going to be fired here anyway after next season or before.

Sam James, Wheaton at WR don’t look good either. The recruiting is terrible and the cupboard is bare. The QBs are bad and the RBs are average. Behind Sills, Jennings, Simms there is no WRs. Dana is done. The defense sucks always under Dana and his staff.

I'll pitch in a couple bucks to help Mr. Fertitta with this endeavour.

If Houston was going to fire Applewhite they would have done so by now. The only way Holgorsen would end up at Houston is if he got fired from wvu. Houston isn't going to pay over 4 million dollars for an average coach.

UH might be waiting until January to fire and hire when the discounts are cheaper.

In the weeks leading up to Houston’s blowout loss to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl, word percolated in the coaching community that Major Applewhite might not be safe to return for his third season as head coach of the Cougars. The way the team played in that game seems to have fueled that fire…
