My Fiver on WVU's loss to Houston last night:
1. Opened up the ASU loss down 10-2, down by 1 at half with just 23 first half points.
Opened up the KSU loss down 19-2, down by 24 at the half with just 18 first half points.
Opened up the Houston loss down 13-3, down by 20 at the half with just 19 first half points.
I'm sensing a trend.
2. We have no player in double figures. We really, really struggle to score the ball now against air. When we go up against Houston, forget about it.
3. Man for man, we're just not equipped to compete with Houston. It really puts an emphasis on how impressive our wins over Kansas and Iowa State are, given the circumstances. In order to compete with the top teams in this league, our supporting cast need to be damn near at the top of their games on both ends of the floor. We're not getting that right now.
4. It absolutely, positively does not sit well with this Mountaineer Fan that we are not competitive against Houston. It is infuriating that programs like Iowa State and Texas Tech sit near the top of the conference in basketball and pound us in football. We are better than this and we are in transition. We'll just need to be patient this year because I do believe that help is on the way in basketball, and we need to nail a couple important pieces in the portal this offseason. I don't know if I can stomach a transition season in football, but it's most likely going to occur.
5. 13-7, 4-5 in Big 12. Well, I said previously that the path to the NCAA was a 4-4 January, and we ended the month 3-5. At this point, the way we are playing it's hard to see 4 or 5 more wins, but that is what we need. I don't know if we'll be up for it, but I'll be impressed if Darian DeVries is able to cobble together an NCAA bid out of this group.
