Dear West Virginia

Stop....please for the love of God stop......

It wasn't like a slave owner was raping his slaves under the American flag and saluting it while doing the act. The Nazis, Soviets, and crazy ISIS people are/were killing UNDER their flags......

The Rebel flag is one of traitors, and flying it is condoning and supporting treason.

The Rebel flag is not one of traitors. The whole Civil War was fought over economics, not just about "freeing the slaves" like everyone tends to believe. You could say our very own USA flag is one of traitors since we declared war on our homeland of Great Britain back in the day.

The rebel flag has no use of being compared to Nazi, Soviets, or Isis people as well like you tried in an earlier post.

You seem educated. So I will not be too harsh. But, you are completely wrong here.

1. If you are British, then yes, the American flag is one of traitors. But if you are AMERICAN, then it's not. An educated person should be able to understand that we were loyal to the new AMERICAN nation, thus we weren't traitors.

2. If you are American, then the Rebel flag IS one of traitors. They went against OUR NATIONAL government. An act against your representative government.....treason. So, if you were a Confederate, then you said you weren't committing treason. But since they weren't successful in their secession attempts, they are/were traitors. If that offends you are anyone else....so be it......

3. The Civil War had many things mixed in it....but to try to say it wasn't solely about slavery.....nah. Since 1787 when the delegates debated the new Constitution, what was the one hot topic that kept being brought up and compromised about? Yep, slavery. Then again when Missouri wanted to be a state.....yep, slavery. Then when California wanted to become a state....yep, slavery. Then when Kansas-Nebraska was being pushed as a territory for statehood because of the proposed Transcontinental RR....yep, slavery. So, slavery was the MAJOR cause of the Civil War. Economics....ahh....industry vs. agriculture.....ahh......small parts.

Slavery was the foundation of the economic system the South sought to perpetuate. The economic freedom the South wished to maintain was the freedom to own, buy and sell other people. Those are economic reasons. The abolition of slavery cost slaveowners what had theretofore been property and they did not receive compensation. Additionally, the transformation of the labor market made the large landholdings (which are the basis of wealth in an agrarian society) less valuable because it either cost more to grow crops when workers had to be paid or the landowner received less of the crops grown when they only got a share and the tenant farmers received a share. That's why the Plantation economy collapsed following the war. The economic system of the South was not viable without slavery, so saying the war was fought for economic reasons is true but very misleading unless one acknowledges that slavery was necessary for that economic system to survive.

The racial component would be more easily "euphemized away" if white people could have legally been owned as slaves in antebellum America, but that was not the case.

The South fought because its leaders believed that if it did not racial-based slavery would be ended, sooner rather than later, and it did not want that to happen.

while driving through the state of WV this past weekend to get home I noticed something that kind of confused me. Now I love many things about WV, such as pepperoni rolls, the buckwheat festival, Oliverios and Murials resteraunts, wings ole ect but seeing so many Reble flags just makes me laugh. Not sure that many that live in WV realize that WV broke away from Virginia because they did not want to fight in the side of the confederacy and made the state known as West Virginia. Just helping out here

Rebel flags!!! Hell, I thought those were British flags.
