I would consider The Daily Show a bigger deal in US culture than the show following Letterman and plus The Daily Show has a lot of American politics talk in it which would have lead me to think an American would get the job.

While I agree 100% with you. It's kind of sad than many Americans get their news from these sources and take it as gospel.
