Cramer’s Double Leads to Win at No. 11 Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. (May 9, 2015) – A two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth led the West Virginia University baseball team to a 5-4 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma State in the resumption of Friday’s game on Saturday morning at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The game had been suspended because of lightning and rain with runners on first and second for the Mountaineers and Cramer at the plate. Cramer laced a double off the right field wall to easily score sophomore catcher Ray Guerrini for the game-winning run.

Cramer finished with two hits, two runs, one RBI, one double, one triple and one walk to lead the Mountaineers at the plate. Senior shortstop Taylor Munden and freshman second baseman Shaun Corso added two hits apiece.

West Virginia (25-23, 7-12 Big 12) finished with five runs on nine hits, while Oklahoma State (31-16, 14-8 Big 12) scored four runs on five hits. Neither team committed an error.

Sophomore right-hander Chad Donato entered the game in his first relief appearance of the season and struck out the side after allowing a leadoff double to pick up his first save of the season.

The win was awarded to freshman right-hander BJ Myers (3-4), who pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit shutout relief on Friday. Myers struck out two and walked two.

Freshman right-hander Conner Dotson (0-4) had his best start of the season, tying a career high with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings in the no-decision. He gave up four runs on three hits with five walks.

Scoreless entering the fourth inning, West Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead after back-to-back triples from unlikely sources. Cramer hit his first career triple off the center field wall, hitting a ball that tailed away from Oklahoma State center fielder Ryan Sluder. Davis then followed with his first career triple, hitting a blooper to center field that Sluder attempted to make a diving play on. Senior left fielder Brad Johnson plated Davis with an RBI ground out to shortstop.

West Virginia was able to extend the lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with no outs. Johnson drew a walk for his second RBI of the day, scoring Munden. Corso then lined out to left field, deep enough to score Cramer from third base.

Three walks hurt the Mountaineers in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the Cowboys to tie the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded and one out, Jacob Chappell and Gage Green drew back-to-back RBI walks to cut the deficit in half and Corey Hassel smacked a game-tying two-run single to left field.

Sluder finished with two doubles and Hassel had two RBIs to lead Oklahoma State at the plate. The Cowboys used six relief pitchers with Tyler Buffett taking the loss (3-3) after allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

The Mountaineers were able to work Oklahoma State starter Jon Perrin’s (5-4) pitch count up early, as he only lasted five innings in a no-decision. Perrin gave up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

West Virginia and Oklahoma State return to action on Saturday following a lightning delay. The Mountaineers will send junior left-hander Ross Vance (6-4) to the mound and he will face Cowboys left-hander Michael Freeman (8-2).

The game can be heard throughout the state on affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG with Jeff Culhane and Ernie Galusky on the call.
