MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 2, 2017) - After leading the No. 1-ranked Mountaineers to an NCAA-best showing on Sept. 30, sophomore Milica Babic of the rifle team has been named the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

The Belgrade, Serbia, native paced WVU to an NCAA- record 2390 air rifle showing in the team’s home opener at the WVU Rifle Range. The mark was two-shots better than the previous national record of 2388, shot by the Mountaineers on Jan. 17, 2016.

Babic finished first overall in air rifle, shooting a season-best 598. She also finished first in smallbore with a career-high matching 589 mark.

The Mountaineers defeated No. 5-ranked Ohio State, 4731-4683.


This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 9-ranked Mountaineers open a five-match homestand this weekend with a pair of Big 12 contests at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU faces No. 19 Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m., followed by a match with Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. … Friday is Soctoberfest, and specialty German food and beverages will be available for purchase … Sunday is the team’s annual Pink Game in support of breast cancer awareness month ... all tickets Sunday will be available for $1 each.


Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (9-3, 2-1) earned a late victory at Kansas State on Sept. 29, as senior midfielder Carla Portillo connected on a long shot in the 84th minute to push the Mountaineers to a win at K-State Soccer Complex in Manhattan, Kansas … junior forward Sh’Nia Gordon assisted on the game-winner … sophomore Rylee Foster made two saves for the team’s first shutout of the season in Big 12 play … WVU earned an 18-6 edge in shots and also a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks … K-State’s Miranda Larkin made eight saves in the loss.


Notes: Friday was the first-ever meeting between WVU and K-State … Portillo’s goal was her second of the season and first game-winner of the year … Gordon’s assist was her team-best fifth of the season … WVU shows seven clean sheets on the year, all credited to Foster … OSU is WVU’s seventh ranked opponent of the season, and the Mountaineers are 3-3 against ranked teams … the Cowgirls rank No. 1 in the Big 12 with a 3-0 record.


This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia has five days off before returning to action to open Mid-American Conference play against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. ET at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … tickets are available at WVUGAME.com, 1-800-WVU GAME or on game day at the DDSS ticket office … it is Military and First Responder Night and Kids Club Day … all military and first responders will be admitted free with a valid I.D. … as part of Kids Club Day, there will be a Mountaineer Kids Club giveaway, inflatables, balloon animals, face painting and soccer drill stations … additionally, there will be a Touch-A-Truck event, with various first responsible vehicles on site.


Last Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia suffered a pair of losses last week, at Pitt on Sept. 26 and vs. No. 20 Pacific on Oct. 1 … with a 7-0 loss in Pittsburgh, WVU saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, while the loss snapped a 10-game unbeaten streak in the all-time series against the Panthers … on Sunday, the Mountaineers held the 20th-ranked Tigers to four shots, two on goal … WVU recorded 12 shots, four on goal … junior Rushawn Larmond came off the bench and led West Virginia with three shots, two coming on goal.


Notes: West Virginia is 6-3-2 on the season … WVU continues to lead the all-time series against Pitt, 33-10-5 … Sunday’s game against No. 20 Pacific was the Mountaineers’ first against a ranked opponent this season … Sunday’s match began a season-ending stretch for WVU with six of its last eight games coming at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … senior Jad Arslan ranks seventh nationally and first in the Mid-American Conference with three game-winning goals ... he is tied for second in the MAC alongside sophomore Albert Andres-Llop with four goals … junior keeper Stephen Banick ranks No. 16 nationally with five shutouts, while he is second in the MAC with 28 total saves and 924:32 minutes played.


This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (12-4, 1-2) plays host to No. 11 Kansas (14-2, 3-0) on Wednesday, Oct. 4, with first serve set for 6 p.m. … Wednesday’s match is Dollar Night, and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each … additionally, the first 125 maniacs receive a free WVU water bottle … following its match against KU, the team travels to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor (13-4, 3-1) on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. ET.


Last Week in Volleyball: Despite 56 kills from the offense, West Virginia dropped a 3-1 match to Big 12 foe Texas Tech on Sept. 27 at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas … the Mountaineers took the loss, 20-25, 27-25, 22-25 and 24-26 … the Mountaineers hit .242 with 18 errors and 10 team blocks … sophomore outside hitter Payton Caffrey finished with a team-high 12 kills to go along with 14 digs and two assists … Katie DeMeo and Natania Levak each had 11 kills, while Mia Swanegan rounded out the team in double digits with 10 … in addition, Erin Slinde assisted on 45 kills, while Alexa Hasting leads the team with 22 digs … Lindsay Proctor also reached double-digit digs with 10.


Notes: The No. 11-ranked Jayhawks are the fourth ranked opponent for WVU this season, as the Mountaineers have played three teams ranked inside the top-six thus far … WVU’s three-of-four losses on the season were to the country’s top-six teams (No. 6 Penn State (Aug. 26), No. 2 Minnesota (Sept. 1) and No. 6 Texas (Sept. 23)) … Caffrey continues to lead the Big 12 with .46 aces per set and ranks inside the top 10 in kills (tied for No. 9), digs (10th) and points (tied for No. 6) … Swanegan ranks third with a .414 attacking percentage … Slinde sits in third with 11.23 assists per set … Hasting ranks third with 4.38 digs per set, and DeMeo is tied for eighth with 1.00 blocks per set … Proctor also sits in fifth with .31 aces per set … as a team, West Virginia is hitting .251 and holding its opponents to a .165 clip, while out blocking its opponents, 135.5-104.5.


This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers are off this week … WVU next competes on Friday, October 13, at the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pennsylvania.


Last Week in Cross Country: WVU earned an eighth-place team finish at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, Sept. 30 … redshirt senior Maggie Drazba paced the Mountaineers with a 5k time of 17:09.52 and a 21st-place finish … redshirt senior Amy Cashin also finished in the top 30, crossing the finish line in 17:17.16, good for 29th … WVU finished with 269 team points.


Notes: Redshirt freshman Sarah Wills (17:38.17), freshman Hayley Jackson (17:46.45) and redshirt sophomores Candace Jones (17:47.87) also factored into the Mountaineers’ point total at Louisville … redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill, freshman Bree Warren, redshirt freshman Antigone Archer and redshirt senior Rebecca Wendt also raced … Jackson and Warren made their WVU debuts at the meet … Saturday’s race ended a 22-day break in the Mountaineers’ schedule … the Greater Louisville Classic’s field consisted of 328 runners from 37 Division I schools … the Mountaineers sat No. 20 in FloTrack’s FloXC Women’s Team Rankings last week … WVU received votes in last week’s edition of the USTFCCCA’s Division I National Coaches’ Poll and were placed fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the weekly regional rankings.


Coach Sean Cleary following Saturday’s meet at Louisville: “This was a huge test for our program,” Cleary said. “We had almost the entire group on the line and emerged with what I would consider a good performance. While we won’t leave this course ecstatic, we will leave with the understanding that we ran well but must get better.”


This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers do not compete this week.


Last Week in Rifle: WVU (2-0, 1-0 GARC) opened its home season at the WVU Rifle Range victoriously, defeating No. 5 Ohio State, 4731-4683, on Sept. 30 … the Mountaineers’ swept the discipline wins, defeating the Buckeyes in air rifle, 2390-2361, and smallbore, 2341-2322 … the team’s air rifle total is an NCAA record … sophomore Milica Babic earned the individual wins, matching her career-high smallbore score of 589 and shooting a season-best 598 air rifle.


Notes: The team’s aggregate total topped its best 2016-17 mark of 4726 and was nine shots short of matching the team’s NCAA record … the previous air rifle record was 2388, shot on Jan. 17, 2016, in a win against Akron … junior Ginny Thrasher shot a program-record 200 prone … junior Will Anti shot a career-high 594 air rifle … five Mountaineers combined for the team’s scores: Babic, Thrasher, senior Elizabeth Gratz, sophomore Morgan Phillips and redshirt-freshman David Koenders.

Notes: The Janney VCU Shootout marked WVU’s second win since the 1980s … the team also claimed the East Carolina Intercollegiate last season … three Mountaineers made their debuts as Matthew Sharpstene and Mark Goetz played in their first-ever collegiate events, while Philipp Matlari made the lineup for the first time at WVU as a sophomore transfer … all five WVU scorers placed in the top-20 … Matlari, Sear and Nicholls all carry a scoring average under 71.00 … four players (Matlari, Sear, Nicholls and Papineau) shot at least one round of 60 or better … Sear tied his program low with a 66.


This Week in Swimming & Diving: WVU officially opens its 2017-18 regular season at the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 6-7, at the WVU Natatorium … the two-day competition begins Friday at 4 p.m. ET with diving events, while swimming is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. … Saturday’s events start at 10 a.m.


Last Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers participated in the annual Gold-Blue Meet on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the WVU Natatorium … the Blue team defeated Gold, 164-143 … junior Morgan Carr and sophomore Julia Nilton led the Blue team to three wins each … redshirt junior Tristen DiSibio, junior Merwane El Merini and sophomore Julia Miranda added two wins apiece for the Blue squad … the Gold team was led by redshirt senior Nate Carr’s three total wins … the Mountaineer divers competed in mixed synchronized events.


Notes: The Blue team’s victory in the preseason intrasquad meet was its first in three years … the West Virginia State Games features swimming and diving programs from across the state of West Virginia … Friday marks the seventh consecutive season WVU will participate in the all-Mountain State meet … the Mountaineer men won the WV State Games in 2016-17, while the women finished second … this weekend’s meet is the first of four regular season meets to be held at the WVU Natatorium.


Coach Vic Riggs following Saturday’s Gold-Blue Meet: “I thought the energy was great,” Riggs said. “The teams swam well for their first meet. We definitely have some areas we need to work on, but it’s early in the season and I thought it was a great start for the teams.”


This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers will kick off the 2017 fall season with races against Duquesne and Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Morgantown ... Saturday’s race is slated for a 10:00 a.m. start and will be held on the Monongahela River.


Notes: Saturday’s meet against Duquesne marks the fifth straight season that the Mountaineers and Dukes have met ... three of the previous five races have taken place in Morgantown ... WVU announced the addition of 14 members to the novice squad on Sept. 15 ... the novice team will begin competition at the Head of Occoquan on Nov. 4 in Fairfax Station, Virginia.


This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers open the 2017 fall season at the Cleveland State Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 6-8 ... WVU will face host Cleveland State, Akron and Cincinnati during the three-day tournament.


Notes: WVU has eight letterwinners returning for the 2017-18 campaign, including two seniors, Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez ... Choo leads the team with 77 career victories ... Choo was won 39 singles matches and 37 in doubles action ... Martinez ranks second on the team with 56 total wins ... Martinez led the Mountaineers with five singles victories last fall ... Choo led WVU in the spring with five singles wins ... junior Paula Goetz registered a team-leading nine doubles victories last spring.


This Week in Baseball: West Virginia opens its fall slate with a pair of games this weekend … WVU hosts in-state foe Marshall on Friday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers then host their annual alumni game on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11:30 a.m. … all fall games will be held at Monongalia County Ballpark, and admission is free for all fans.


Notes: West Virginia’s fall schedule includes four games at Monongalia County Ballpark … along with Marshall and the Alumni Game this weekend, WVU hosts Bucknell on Sunday, Oct. 15, at noon and Delaware State on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. … the Mountaineers are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance, their 12th in program history and first since 1996 … WVU advanced to the NCAA regional final for the third time in school history and posted a 36-26 record in 2017 … coach Randy Mazey, now in his sixth season, was named the recipient of the Chuck Tanner College Coach of the Year Award by the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh last week … Mazey will receive the award at the 11th annual Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Rivers Club in Downtown Pittsburgh … twenty-six players return from last year’s team, including nine of a program-record 12 that earned All-Big 12 Team honors in 2017 … junior Braden Zarbnisky was named a 2017 Third Team All-American, the NCBWA District II Player of the Year and a John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award finalist along with earning All-Big 12 First Team accolades … senior BJ Myers, juniors Jimmy Galusky, Kyle Gray, Michael Grove and Darius Hill and sophomores Sam Kessler, Alek Manoah and Brandon White return after being recognized on the All-Big 12 Second Team, Honorable Mention Team and All-Freshman Team a season ago.
