Who said they were sentenced to death? I don't have a problem arresting them and putting them on trial but if they have to worry about someone protecting their property by firing some lead they will think twice about acting violently.

Shot on sight, no. Shot in the act of using deadly force, yes. The police have actually shown a lot of restraint in these situations.
