—Offensive coordinator Gerad Parker said they must continue to take a step. They have to play smart which they didn’t do.

—Isaiah Esdale had a great off-season and great spring. He is fast enough to be a good player in this league and took a step in game one. You can move him around and play him at multiple places so he can pick up reps at multiple spots. He has earned more opportunities moving forward.

—Sam James caught the ball better but he has put in a lot of work. He has been catching a lot of balls in camp and now they have to score touchdowns. They have to score touchdowns in the open field and make things easier for the offense. James dropped a ball and fumbled then played well.

—The absence of Mike O’Laughlin had an impact. Tj Banks played his best game to date but they certainly do miss him when it comes to game planning.

—First off there is no secret you lose run game possibilities with ten personnel. Explosive has to equal touchdowns. There is a true thing to life and football if you think it then therefore I am. You have to practice those areas of weaknesses and get better. You have to find ways to create space and be explosive in the pass game.

—The performance of Doege in the pocket was better but he still has to make better decisions. There is growth but it’s a high tension position and every decision he makes affects the entire team. There were some good things but he has to continue to get better.

—Parker said the goal is to make sure West Virginia doesn’t beat West Virginia. They have to get better and must play smarter.

—Wright did a great job on KOR. There was some fatigue things where they probably would have subbed looking back when he was at wide receiver. They expect him to be great and will need to continue to improve. Parker wants to see him take on contact the right way and they need to win at the break points and the collision points in the routes.

—Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley said they obviously didn’t start well and that’s on him. He knew they were going to get formations and plays they’d hadn’t seen but they had to adjust on the run with that tempo. They had to get things slowed down and was happy they made them kick a field goal. But the communication issues in the secondary got them. The positive is they got adjusted but they have to continue to improve on that.

—Play better with what they’ve got. He’s excited about the defense and it’s a humbling experience.

—Jordan Jefferson running around and playing the fundamentals of the defense. He played fast. Sean Martin showed up.

—Mesidor made a tackle to the field away from him on the first play of the game or they likely score on a screen. The effort was there all game and they need to get everybody playing like him.

—The techniques are similar at nose and tackle and the issues they create when they move them makes a lot of sense. They slide those guys back and forth.

—There we’re communication issue on a signal and some various other items in the backend. It’s something they have to get fixed. You have to over communicate on defense with how teams play anymore and some things popped up that hadn’t shown up to that point.

—Taijh Alston played with great effort. He plays hard and this is really his first offseason. He makes up with some of the things he is fine tuning with his effort. As the season goes on the speed is going to slow down as he stacks games he’ll be a lot better.

—Daryl Porter is going through a natural learning progression. You have to have a short memory. Those aren’t going to be the last good receivers he plays in his college career. One was a fundamental issue and the next was communication. They are still really young players and they are going to make mistakes. Porter is going to be fine and will come in and learn from that.

—The tackling issues were angles as much as actually tackling. They tried to do too much instead of rushing the passer.

—Mesidor understands how to play different blocks and has more knowledge of the game to go with his effort and reckless style of play. He’s playing catch up and is learning how to attack certain pass sets and blocks.

—Sean Martin is a big kid and has a lot of body as his muscles are trying to play catch-up. He can uses his length now that he’s gotten stronger and that will continue to get better the older he gets. He is going to be fine.

—Lesley is going to get a lot more people in the game to see what they’ve got on the roster. Now they know where they are and at the end of the day they had a chance to get the ball back to the offense and win the game. They didn’t get it done and there are so many things to learn with this group. There’s only one way to learn and that is to play.
