I posted one of these photos a few years ago. I took all these pictures.

Kind of like my dad tells me stories about Mountaineer Field House... I sometimes hear stories on here about Old Mountaineer Field. I was lucky enough that my dad started taking me to games - just before the old stadium went away.
I saw 5 games from 1977 to 1979; Richmond and Temple in 1977... Richmond and Syracuse in 1978... and Tulane in 1979.

These photos are from the Richmond game in 1978 -- season opener -- we barely won. Single game ticket was $8, but I got a special student ticket for $3 (I think?). I didn't realize it though... but my seat (I was 12 years old) was in the metal bleachers in the endzone. My Dad's ticket was in the bowl end. I got 1 photo from his seat... the rest of the photos from my seat. The photo of the players mobbing each other was right after a touchdown was scored. I forget who caught it. Maybe Cedric Thomas?

That last one was a little blurry....you should have just erased it and took it again.

I was at the 63 - 48 win against Pitt. If you turned your head, you probably missed a score.

Were you there to see Kerry Marbury bust the 100 yarder agin Penn State in 72? Penn State made WV pay dearly for that 100 return.

Winter Tim, Thanks so much for posting these. I wish there were more. I may have been there since my father had season tickets and he could always get extras against opponents that weren't pitt or psu. I was 15 then and have a lot of memories of being able to go on the field after the game and actually enter the locker room with the players! I would them ask for their throw away elbow pads. No. 31 in the last pic, of course, is Robert Alexander. Boy, I remember he was going to change everything, the no. 1 recruited player coming out of HS. Those were the days that turned your blood to run blue and gold forever. I remember people saying that it didn't matter if the team was 11-0 or 0-11, we always cheer for our Mountaineers!

wow, that's impressive. I missed three in 8 years.
My dad started taking me to every home game at age 5 in 69 and I missed my first home game after the Oklahoma win in 82 due to strep throat and was hospitalized. Then didn't miss another through 86. Saw a ton of bball games during that time frame as well but unfortunately missed a good many in the early 70's during the week. Great times.

I didn't miss hardly any bball games from 72-80. My brother was on the team fro three years, 76,77,78. Free tickets!

And do you remember Tom Pridemore's 102 yd. interception return against ps?
Was that around 1977 or 78? I remember listening to a game on the radio... Penn St... Mountaineer Field... and an interception return for a TD made it 14-0, WVU. I thought, "oh wow... we are going to beat Penn State!" I think we lost something like 45-14 after getting that lead. ha ha

it was at Penn State.

NO that game was at Old Mountaineer Field - I think it must have been 78. I remember it quite well. We had seats on the Press Box side in the last section toward the river - and those two TD's were scored in that end. It was all downhill from there.

One of the best games I saw was 1971 vs Temple. Temple brought there band. WVU entered the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead. By the middle of the quarter Temple lead by 10. WVU ended up winning by 10. Kerry Marbury rushed for 291 yards, however Greg Pruitt of Oklahoma rushed for 292 and got all the publicity that week.

From 68 to about 75 we went to 1 game a year - dad took vacation the week we went to get Saturday off. 76-79 we had season tickets.

Who is the team in the actual gold pants?
That's what the color Old Gold, as in Old Gold and Blue, looks like. As the season wore on they faded a bit and we're less brassy.

I was in school then and we used to line up early in the morning behind the press box entrance to student section seating, I think they would open the gates about 10 am or so and we would rush to find good seats.

Pretty sure that Tom Pridemore had a 102 yard interception return against Penn State at Penn State. I looked up tom and somebody posted his 101 yard return against Joe Montana and somebody commented that he had one against Penn State at penn State in 1977. That would be the away game since the home games were in even years.

Those were some rough years to begin your Mountaineer experience. Thank God for Don Nehlen.

Yes Pridemore had a int return from end zone to end zone at PSU. But we were already way behind in that game when that happened. In 78 at home we took a real quick 14-0 lead but if I remember correctly we were behind before the end of the 1st quarter.

Great pics. Thx. I was at that game. Junior in HS. We were all waiting for Robert Alexander to break out into the back we all thought he was. Didn't happen til Don arrived my Freshman year in 80.

I loved OMF. Lots of great memories even after it closed. [thumbsup]

...that would be correct....I was in The Pride & am pretty sure we were up 14 before the band all got sat down after pre-game....downhill after that....

So was I. It was like watching a tennis match. You just swiveled your head back and forth on every other play to watch the TD play. Incredible. And that was BEFORE the Big 12 days. Now it's not as astounding.
