Baseball Opens Big 12 Tournament Play

TULSA, Okla. (May 19, 2015) – The West Virginia University baseball team is set to begin play in the 2015 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday morning, as it takes on two-seeded No. 11 Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. ET, at ONEOK Field in its opening game of double-elimination play.

The Mountaineers (27-25, 9-13 Big 12) enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed and are coming off a series win last weekend at home against Texas Tech.

Offensively, West Virginia is led by All-Big 12 Second Team honorees in freshman designated hitter Kyle Davis, sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer and senior shortstop Taylor Munden.

Davis leads the team with a .353 batting average, 17 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 31 RBIs. Cramer is hitting .292 and has 15 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 20 RBIs, while Munden has a team-leading 11 home runs with 11 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Mazey will send sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (7-5, 3.01 ERA) to the mound. Donato picked up his seventh win of the season last Thursday against Texas Tech, allowing four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Donato will be opposed by the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, senior left-hander Michael Freeman (9-2, 1.06 ERA). Freeman ranks No. 4 nationally in ERA and has struck out 85 batters in 93.2 innings, holding opponents to a .183 batting average.

The Cowboys are paced by sophomore outfielder Ryan Sluder, who is batting .316 with 13 doubles, six homers and 22 RBIs. Junior outfielder Corey Hassel is hitting .312 with 10 doubles, one triple, three homers and 30 RBIs.

West Virginia and Oklahoma State were only able to play one of the scheduled three regular-season games due to rain and lightning. The Mountaineers won 5-4 in the lone contest.

The Big 12 Championship will have all games televised on Fox College Sports, while the games can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG with Jeff Culhane on the call.

Additionally, fans can listen to the broadcast via the WVU Gameday App on their mobile device, as well as the TuneIn Radio App. WVUsports.com also will carry free live audio via the LeanStream Player at WVUsports.com/audio.
