What is the benefit of bowl games from the “old days” ??
1. As Nehlen always said, it was reward for the players on a great season. Nowadays, that means Rolexes, Nintendo Switches, and bowl swag. I mean some of these places are not exactly tropical locales in December and not really a treat for fans and players, anymore.
2. Again, as per Nehlen and the old days, you get extra bowl practices and it was really key for the young guys. Is this even important anymore with summer OTAs and spring practices and early enrollees in January ? Is this even important anymore ??
3. With all of the end of the season movement (coaches, players, portal, transfers, etc.,) it has been decimated in importance and even the teams in the playoffs have portaled players and coaching changes. How can this be policed or controlled ? Is that even possible ??
With all of this said, how about have the 12 team playoffs and then have next season, pre season games that do count to see how teams fare against their bowl opponents ?
We get to see the match ups in week zero at a neutral bowl location in late August in North America (which should be nice weather.)
We get to see “our teams” at their full capacity with the coach that they will go into battle with for the entire season. And the game won’t hurt against their record as much since it will most likely be a game which will help their strength of schedule even with an early season L.
We can play that week zero game (if you are a bowl team) and if not, you play week one. Each team can only play 9 - P5 games and only 8 in conference games. If you do not have a week zero game, then you can load up with cupcakes for your 3 OOC games and if you have a week zero game then you play a 13 game schedule.
If you are NOT in your Conference Championship game, then your season is over unless you are in the Top 12 teams.
