WVU Release Reed Named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 24, 2023) – Junior Carlson Reed of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments after a clutch performance against TCU over the weekend.



Reed picked up the save in the series opener against the Horned Frogs, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out four in a 5-4 victory. He came into the game with two runners on in the seventh and was able to preserve the Mountaineer lead before striking out two in the eighth and finishing the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.



Taking on the closer’s role this season, Reed is 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA while collecting four saves. In 25.0 innings pitched, he has struck out 36 batters while walking just 11 and is currently on a 7.0 scoreless inning streak. The Marietta, Georgia native is also holding opponents to just a .217 batting average.



This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers won four games this week, beginning with Penn State at home on Tuesday before traveling to Waco to take on Baylor over the weekend … First pitch against the Nittany Lions is set for 6:30 p.m. om Tuesday, April 25… First pitch against Baylor on Friday, April 28, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 29, for 3 p.m., and Sunday, April 30, for 12 p.m.



Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 4-0 this past week, defeating Pitt at PNC Park before sweeping TCU at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark … in the Backyard Brawl, the Mountaineers defeated Pitt, 9-4, scoring nine unanswered runs … four relievers combined to throw 6.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts … graduate student Tevin Tucker had three hits while junior Braden Barry, redshirt-senior Caleb McNeely and graduate Dayne Leonard each drove in two runs … on April 21 against the Horned Frogs, WVU won, 5-4 … junior Landon Wallace hit a two-run home run and freshman Sam White hit a three-run home run … the Mountaineers defeated TCU, 7-4, on April 22 … Wallace had three hits and two RBIs while freshman Ellis Garcia hit a three-run home run … West Virginia completed the sweep with a 17-7, seven-inning win on April 23 … Leonard had three hits and two RBIs and sophomore Grant Hussey hit a home run and drove in five … sophomore JJ Wetherholt made his return to action after missing five games with two hits and four RBIs.



Notes: The Mountaineers improved to 5-0 at PNC Park, having defeated Pitt three times and Penn State twice … Caleb McNeely hit the first home run for the Mountaineers in the five games at PNC Park … the sweep of TCU was the third of the season for West Virginia, having already swept Minnesota and UNC Greensboro … it was the first sweep of a Big 12 opponent since taking three against Kansas State last May … junior Carlson Reed earned the save on Friday and has not given up a run in 6.2 innings … Hussey’s home run on Sunday was his ninth of the season, tying him with McNeely for the most on the team … Tevin Tucker was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List for the nation’s top shortstop … graduate student Blaine Traxel was named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List … the total attendance for the three games over the weekend was 9,152, setting a new record for a three-game series.



This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers 2022-23 season has concluded.



Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers concluded their 2023 regular season after falling, 4-0, to No. 11 Iowa State on April 18, in Lawrence, Kansas … during doubles play, sophomore Camilla Bossi and senior Ting-Pei Chang fell to No. 52 Thasaporn Naklo and Anna Supapitch Kuearum, 6-0 … WVU dropped the doubles point after sophomore/junior pair Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato fell to No. 64 Ange Oby Kajuru and Xinyi Nong, 5-7 … at No. 3 doubles, redshirt freshman Maja Dodik and sophomore Tatiana Lipatova went unfinished at 5-5 … during singles play, the Cyclones went on a 3-0 run over Chang, Kucharova and Bossi to claim the victory over West Virginia … Dodik, sophomore Tatiana Lipatova and fifth-year senior Pei-Ju Hsieh went unfinished … on Thursday, April 20, the No. 9-seeded Mountaineers fell to the No. 8-seeded TCU Horned Frogs, 4-0, in the opening round of the 2023 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships in Lawrence … TCU claimed the doubles point after Kucharova and Nagato fell, 6-1, and Bossi and Chang fell, 6-2 … moving on to singles play, Bossi, Dodik and Hsieh fell in two straight sets … the remaining matches with Chang, Nagato and Lipatova were unfinished.



Notes: Thursday’s contest against the Horned Frogs marked the conclusion of the 2022-23 season … it also served as senior Hsieh’s final collegiate match … West Virginia finished with an overall record of 11-12, and 1-8 in Big 12 play.



This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia continues the campaign with split squad action at the Penn Relays hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from April 27-29 and the Mountaineer Twilight in Morgantown at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park on Saturday, April 29.



Last Week in Track and Field: Sophomore Ceili McCabe led the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished at 9:45.40 … senior Tessa Constantine took the lead from lane five in the

400-meter hurdles and never looked back … the Sydney, Australia, native finished the race in 59.43 … redshirt senior Mikaela Lucki led the 1,500-meter run and claimed victory with a time of 4:21.99 to earn a personal best … senior Katherine Dowie ran with Lucki, as they separated themselves from the rest of the pack … redshirt senior Hayley Jackson won the 800 with a time of 2:06.40 … freshman Olivia Cress won thehigh jump by setting her personal best with a jump of 1.69 meters … senior Sada Wright claimed first in the discus throw with an effort of 45.52.



Notes: McCabe’s effort is good enough for second best in WVU’s record book, only behind her 9:30.69 effort in 2022 … Constantine missed her personal record by .12 seconds, but her effort is good enough for fifth in the WVU record book … Wright’s performance ranks fourth in the WVU record book.

This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will compete at the Big 12 Golf Championship from Monday to Wednesday in Hutchinson, Kansas.



Last Week in Golf: Todd Duncan to the Mountaineers to a third-place finish at the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … the Shady Spring, West Virginia, native shot 73-78-70=221 (+5) to finish tied for sixth place … WVU shot 302-303-291=896 (+32), finishing one spot behind Drexel for second place in the 13-team field … freshman Kaleb Wilson and junior Jackson Davenport tied for 24th place at 10-over-par … Wilson shot 76-77-73=226, while Davenport recorded rounds of 77-71-78=226 … sophomore Max Green tied for 26th with rounds of 80-77-70=227 (+11) and Westy McCabe shot 76-84-79=239 … playing as individuals, junior Oli Ménard paced WVU, finishing 15th with rounds of 76-74-74=224 (+8) … junior Will Stakel had rounds of 77-73-80=23
