WVU Release Quinerly Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 11, 2023) – Junior guard JJ Quinerly of the West Virginia University women’s basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.



The Norfolk, Virginia, native averaged 23.5 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals across two contests for the Mountaineers. She scored over 20 points for the third and fourth straight games this season, helping WVU to wins over No. 25 Penn State and Delaware State.



She opened the week on Dec. 6, with 22 points helping WVU to an 83-65 win over Penn State. She added four rebounds and three steals.



Quinerly closed out the week with a double-double, scoring a season-high 25 points and a career-high 12 assists in a 107-43 win over Delaware State. She flirted with a quadruple-double, adding eight rebounds and seven steals in the win. She led the Mountaineers in all four categories.



She is the first player in program history to reach the stat line in a game. It is the second double-double of her career and the second-most points of her career.



Her steals in the game are the second-most by any Big 12 player this year and tied for third-most in assists by a player in the conference.



This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia has completed the 2023 season … the MLS SuperDraft will take place on Dec. 19.



Last Week in Men’s Soccer:
The Mountaineers fell to Clemson, 1-0, in the NCAA College Cup Semifinals on Dec. 8, at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville … the Tigers took the lead in the 37th minute and held on to advance to the National Championship game … West Virginia outshot Clemson, 9-8, while the Tigers had a 5-2 shots on goal advantage … WVU earned six corner kicks, compared to three for the Tigers.

West Virginia finishes the 2023 season with a 17-3-4 record, setting a new program record for wins in a season … it was the first trip to the College Cup for the Mountaineers in program history … sophomore Marcus Caldeira and senior Yutaro Tsukada were named All-Americans by United Soccer Coaches … Caldeira earned a spot on the second team while Tsukada was named to the third team … Caldeira and Tsukada also were named First-Team All-Southeast Region by United Soccer Coaches … senior Luke McCormick joined the duo on the first team while senior Jackson Lee and junior Frederik Jorgensen earned spots on the second team … Tsukada led the Mountaineers with 33 points on 12 goals and nine assists … Caldeira matched Tsukada for the team lead in goals with 12 … Lee played all 2,160 minutes for WVU in goal this season, second-most in the nation … he made 66 saves on the season with a .742 save percentage while allowing just 0.96 goals per game.



This Week in Women’s Basketball:
The Mountaineers do not compete this week… they return to the court on Monday, Dec. 18, when they play host to Wright State at the WVU Coliseum … tipoff is set for 10 a.m. ET, with the contest serving as Education Day.



Last Week in Women’s Basketball:
West Virginia opened its week with the most impressive win of the season on Dec. 6, when it knocked off No. 25 Penn State with an, 83-65, win ... West Virginia was led by junior guard JJ Quinerly, who tallied a game-high 22 points while adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists … redshirt junior guard Kyah Watson paced the squad with eight rebounds and added 15 points … the win over Penn State is the first for the Mountaineers since 1989 … the win also marks the 56th time WVU has defeated a ranked opponent and the 29th time at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers then collected another win, this one in dominating fashion, 107-43, over Delaware State on Dec. 10, at the WVU Coliseum … Quinerly had a career night with 25 points, adding a career-high 12 assists for her first double-double of the season … she added eight rebounds and seven assists … six Mountaineers finished in double figures in the contest.

The Mountaineers are a perfect 9-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season … the Mountaineers broke the century mark for just the 25th time in program history against Delaware State … West Virginia has held its opponents to 22.5% from 3-point range this season, which is the 13th-best mark in the country ... WVU adds top-10 rankings in scoring defense (51.2), steals per game (14.8), turnover margin (9.89) and turnovers forced per game (25.1) … Quinerly (18.4), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (13.1) and fifth-year senior guard Lauren Fields (11.3) pace WVU’s offensive effort as the trio averages double-digit scoring per game … all three average over 2.5 steals per contest, serving as the only team in the country with three players averaging double figures and over 2.9 steals.

Last Week in Wrestling:
WVU registered a 2-0 road sweep of Big 12 foes Air Force (27-11) and Northern Colorado (31-9) … junior Jett Strickenberger (125), redshirt sophomore Jordan Titus (141), true freshman Ty Watters (149), senior Peyton Hall (165), redshirt freshman Brody Conley (174) and redshirt junior Austin Cooley (197) all earned a pair of wins individually as well … it also marked the first Big 12 loss for both Air Force and Northern Colorado.

WVU stands at 6-1 overall to open the 2023-24 campaign … it marks the first time that West Virginia has jumped out to a 6-1 start in back-to-back seasons since 1963 and 1964 … seven members of the squad have reached the double-digit mark in wins including Titus (141), Watters (149), senior Caleb Dowling (157), Hall (165), Conley (174), redshirt junior Dennis Robin (184) and redshirt senior Michael Wolfrgam (HWT) ... Titus and Conley remain undefeated in duals (7-0).




This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia hosts the Almost Heaven LC Open at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown from Dec. 16-19 ... competition begins at 5 p.m. on Dec 16 ... on Dec. 17-19, competition begins with the preliminary round at 10 a.m. each day followed by the finals at 5 p.m.

For the year, senior Danny Berlitz has won 17 individual events for the Mountaineers ... he also was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a pool record (2:58.62) at the Keating Aquatics Center against Cincinnati on Oct. 28.
