Is Brown good enough to take a program like WVU, and be able to compete with an Oklahoma and stay above the lesser surging Texas?

Starts with having a plan in place and finding the players.

Texas wanted to get better on the lines and allow the lines to control the game.
This didn't work out.
Possibly could have with David Ash....

But Tom Herman wants to dominate on lines but also be creative and use speed in space.

I see that WV wants to be more like Iowa St and Texas.
But I see players on their roster like Tevin Bush.

Hopefully Neal Brown gives that guy 10-15 touches a game.

The answer is maybe. No one can know for sure, but he has a resume and way of doing things that inspires hope. The definitive answer is Holgorsen couldn't. So a maybe is better than that even if Brown ultimately turns out to be the same or worse.

Our Holgorsen teams never had an identity.

The only thing I know Brown will do is bring an identity to this program.

I’d argue that’s the first and most important part of an elite program. When kids see that identity on Saturday’s, I believe the right players will find us as much as we’ll find them.

I disagree with that.
Dana did have an identity with West Virginia.

Problem for WV is that Oklahoma is just better at it.

Iowa St is having the same problem with that regarding Texas.

Think either WV gets better at it with better players or go another way.

TCU has.
TCU is not like Oklahoma
Neither are they like Texas

Maybe...
But WV needs players like this.
The #2 RB in Texas. Already an OU commit.
All likelihood Texas will be getting #1 who is the #1 player in the country according to the composite.

This is against high level competition.
Most of these schools have a few college level players

I liked Dana. It wasn’t until after he left that I realized how stagnant we had become as a program, and I am not talking solely about wins and losses, but the feeling of “believing we can” had been replaced with “hoping we can.”

There are only 2 blue bloods in the B12 football. The next tier after that is Oklahoma State and WVU. Recently TCU and Baylor have raised their level, though both have had ups and downs. Texas Tech is tier 3 consistently. And so on and so forth.

What I am getting at is right now WVU has a disadvantage in resources, branding and perception in comparison to Texas and Oklahoma. Only WVU can close that gap. Most years WVU is probably playing for third place on paper in the Big 12. But WVU has shown in 88, 93, and 07 that it can make a serious run at a National championship about once a decade.

The realistic goal for WVU is to shoot for consistent 10-win seasons with a build up for a serious run once in a while. I believe Neal Brown is capable of that, if he truly buys in and stays committed.

Coach Brown came in with a plan. He is organized and knows what he wants. Everything he does has a purpose and has been thought out. From day one Dana was flying from the seat of his pants, no organization, no plan or direction. Coach Brown will get better players because he truly cares about the players. I think he will succeed here at WVU. In fact, I believe we will surprise many this year and make it to a bowl game. Let's go Mountaineers!

This is a WVU board. Not Texas.

Texas Texas. Nobody cares about Texas.

Question Was can WVU get there. Not what Texas and dip wad are doing. It's a simple question. Answer yes and why. Not Texas can do this, this and this.

You are the one who brought up Texas and Oklahoma.

If WV doesn't recruit better...
You will need both Oklahoma and Texas to be down.
This hasn't happen since the mid 90's for one year. In 1997.

It doesn't matter about WV unless WV pulls itself to that level in recruiting.
At least to a Top 25 for a 4 year stretch level.

These two teams will always have a talent advantage over us. That doesnt mean we cannot beat them, but it means we will need to beat them with lesser talent, which is very difficult to do over a long period of time.

If we want to routinely compete for a conference championship we will need to recruit at a more comparable level, for an extended period of time.

We have before. We should be able to recruit in top 25 every year. Top 10 is a whole different ball game.

I dont know where Oklahoma and Texas finish in recruiting but I assume it is high.

We rarely have true talent advantage over anyone in the league except Kansas, ISU and maybe Kansas St.

Where do we normally finish in recruiting? Whats typical for us.

Avg is mid 30's or higher 30's. Dana was slipping into the 50's for a couple years.

Ive always assumed once you get out of the top 10 - 20, its most parity from 20 - 40, but I don't follow it and dont know that.

But it seems the teams who recruit well every year have good teams, with some exceptions....

Mountaineer Football will undergo a very positive
transformation under Coach Brown I believe. Some
of the most important changes will take place off the
field - an organized, thoughtful approach to organizing
the overall program will be the foundation. More
effective recruiting, game-day planning. Seems his
approach to problem-solving is less about yelling and
foot-stomping and more about identifying the issues
and coming up with solid solutions.
Turning to on the field performance. Not sure what the
record will be this first year - but I'm certain that the
Mountaineers will be tougher, more focused and more
disciplined. They will leave it all on the field every game.

You have already heard what I have said..

With the Stills brothers, the Bama transfer and Miller there is a chance if Neal Brown and his staff are great to win 10 games this year possibly.
Logically...I don't see it.

But there are some dogs on D and if Miller is a legit CB WV could have a good D.
This all falls back on Kendall.

Overall..WV needs more dogs everywhere.

Can be true yes. But many high recruits don't pan out. WVU has had some 4 and 5 star players that never made it.

I think WV needs more hybrids players like Osita Smith.
Truthfully WV needs three Osita Smiths
One to play LB, one to play S and one to play WR.

These hybrid players that are 6-2 200-225 are what is needed

Perfect examples are Grant Delpit LSU and BJ Foster from Texas.

I get what you are saying. I have always felt WVU should look for the best athlete available, a guy who plays big on the field, but may not have all the physical measurements. Get the talent in the program, start winning more consistently, and translate the wins into improving recruiting. Not an original concept. If your best available lineman is only 6 feet tall but has 4 star talent, go after him.

Did WV offer. Has offers from Bama, Florida and Georgia.
The guy is a beast. 6-6 310.

So much space to cover that you need players with size that can stop the run but also cover a WR.

It is a certain body type.
6-0 to 6-4
195-225 pounds.

That has good shuffle speed, vertical, 40 time and who has played other sports.

There was a story about Tom Herman and Texas. How Herman wonders about a football player that doesn't run track.

Smith is an athlete developing into a football player.
Those are the guys who you want.

You can teach football
But not athleticism

You mean the fake persona that some students made up?

The one Rivals automatically gave a three star ranking to without a shred of evidence? No highlight tape? Nothing...

When will folks realize this star shit is nothing more than a ploy to get your money. These dipshits couldn't find a supermodel at a fat farm. Just goes to show you how gullible some people truly are.

Oh yeah, I guess you'll need proof

Also shows why Texas can't beat WVU with all their "4 and 5 star players".

Believe that star crap at your own peril.

Also, nobody cares about Texass and what great savior they have coming in next. Ain't been one yet.

Kid messed up by putting Bama.
The recruiting directors in the area became interested.
3 star is a placeholder until they get additional info.
Video, watching the recruit or camps.
A lot of these people put in Long hours and evaluate football players a lot more than coaches...

Tucker Green. Think his Twitter is gone.
He was funny. He trolled the kicker who committed to USC....and called himself a 5 star kicker.

6'5 310 Beast outta WV....built like rock.

All bullshit aside...
You know the most important trait for an OL.

SAT/ACT score.
Everyone thinks you want smart QBs and a bunch of dumb big guys blocking for him

But because OL have to work as a team and apply what they know.
An aptitude test is a great away to decide on OL if they are near the same size

That is about leverage...
Knowing where to apply force.
Something that someone who works at their craft is skilled at.
Why a lot of great OL also wrestled in high school
