'It is insane' — How the ACC's contentious, back-and-forth expansion deal ultimately got done

Further shows how much of a train wreck the ACC conference is currently.

ACC was in communications with Utah, Cal, Stanford, Arizona and Arizona State a week before they announced coming to the Big 12. Three of those schools passed on the ACC for the Big 12. For the Big 12, it makes sense geographically, full payout an of course timing vs partial payout coming from the ACC and getting no votes from FSU, Clemson and UNC.

Big 12 had zero interest with getting Stanford and Californica. It was well known that Big 12 wanted Colorado first. Then was remaining discussions was about Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah. It's a no brainer that if any school can get into the Big 10 or SEC, that's the immediate pick. Washington and Oregon taking pay cuts for now took that option. That made our choice pretty clear with taking 2 to 4 schools. The Big 12 was able to get their targets with ease given the circumstances for all parties involved.

The write up states 20 minutes states the Pac 10 was ready to sign the deal with Apple. There is zero chance all schools are going to sign off to take a significant pay cut vs a full payout from the Big 12. Behind the scenes, Arizona and Arizona State were already in the process of heading towards the Big 12. Go visit the Arizona board and follow Jason (their Vernon version) about this part.

ACC struck out with every target from the Pac 10 until the other 3 Power Five conferences was done with expansion. Now, at tremendous discount prices, they added Stanford, California and SMU. Meanwhile, the constant 3 of Clemson, FSU and UNC are against it and will eventually be out of the conference. NCST, not being sure if they have a ticket to the big table, played the safe card with flipping their vote to allow the newest members.

SMU taking zero cut for the next seven years that finally gets them into a Power 5 for 9 years. Stanford and California gets 30% cut for 7 years. Trying to make Dallas a neutral site to help travel costs. All of this comes from desperation with new members and ACC getting ready to lose members.

The ACC has a lot of Big East feel from the past. ND gets special privileges, current members within are looking for reasons to leave and having poor leadership with planning for the future of the conference.
