1993 11-1 WVU vs. 10-2 Penn State would've been a hell of a battle.

Penn State's only losses that year under JoePa were to #3 Ohio State and #18 Michigan, playing both teams on the road. PSU would win the Citrus Bowl vs. #6 Tennessee 31-13 and finish the season ranked #13. (Sidebar: That made me think of Steve Spurrier's famous quip as HC of Florida: "You can't spell 'Citrus' without 'UT'!")

WVU famously went undefeated in the regular season with two huge back-to-back wins over #4 ranked Miami(Fla.) in the greatest game ever played at Mountaineer field, and a stunner victory the next week in Chestnut Hill, Mass., over #11 Boston College, who had just upset #1 Notre Dame in South Bend.

Our final game in our decades long series with Penn State was the infamous Rodney Woodard fumble game in Morgantown in 1992, where WVU would lose 40-26 after giving up two PSU TDs in the final minute of the game. The 1993 game never happened, with WVU losing Penn State on the schedule and filling that gap with Missouri...who we would thrash, 35-3.

In '93, we had two common opponents: Maryland and Rutgers. PSU stomped Maryland 70-7 in College Park, and beat Rutgers 31-7 in Happy Valley. WVU beat Maryland 42-37 in College Park, and pummeled Rutgers 58-22 in Morgantown.

Penn State featured Kerry Collins at QB, Ki-Jana Carter at RB, Kyle Brady at TE and Bobby Engram at WR.

WVU featured Whiskey Jake Kelchner and Darren Studstill at QB, Robert Walker at RB, and a host of talent at WR with Jay Kearney, Mike Baker, Ed Hill and Rashaan Vanterpool. Defensively, we had a ton of talent with Aaron Beasley and Mike Logan at corners, Vann Washington, Mike Collins and David Mayfield at safeties, and linebackers for days with Tim Brown, Derrick Wiley, Tarris Alexander, Puppy Wright and Matt Taffoni.

It would've been a hell of game, played at Beaver Stadium in State College, PA. It would've been played during the season, say mid-October on a crisp autumn afternoon...I think we would've pulled out the "W", 17-14 on a late Tom Mazzone FG.
