MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 9, 2025) – Sophomore Ty Watters of the West Virginia University wrestling team will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to injury.
“We're really disappointed for Ty,” head coach Tim Flynn said. “I think there's hardly a guy in the world who likes to wrestle as much as Ty Watters, so from that standpoint, we're disappointed, but we're happy we're moving forward. It's on the clock now for the countdown to next year, so the positive is that he gets a medical redshirt, and we will have him for three more years.”
Watters is currently ranked No. 3 in the 149-pound weight class, according to FloWrestling.
Watters has not competed for West Virginia since Nov. 14, against Rider. In that match, he won by technical fall over then-No. 24 Sammy Alvarez, 16-1 [T – 5:00].
As a freshman, Watters won a Big 12 title in 2024 and placed fourth at the NCAA Division I Championships.
The Mountaineers are currently ranked No. 22 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and will host No. 18 Pitt in the Backyard Brawl on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
