MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 17, 2025) – The No. 22 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated No. 20 Oklahoma, 22-13, for its first ranked win since 2023 and its first win over the Sooners since 2018 on Friday night in Norman, Oklahoma.

West Virginia (8-3, 2-2 Big 12) ended a two-match losing streak with the win. This also marked just the third time the Mountaineers have defeated Oklahoma in program history.

Senior No. 13 Jett Strickenberger began the night by defeating No. 23 Antonio Lorenzo by major decision, 11-2. This marked Strickenberger’s third straight win against a ranked opponent in the 125-pound weight class.

The Sooners won the next three matches to lead, 10-4, heading into the 157-pound match.

In the 157-pound match, redshirt freshman Sasha Gavronsky picked up an important win, defeating Landyn Sommer by decision, 7-4. The victory put the Mountaineers down three with five matches remaining.

Fifth-year No. 3 Peyton Hall improved to 21-0 on the year, defeating Oklahoma’s No. 30 Tate Picklo by technical fall, 17-2.

After a loss in the 174-pound match, redshirt senior No. 23 Dennis Robin put the Mountaineers up for good. Robin earned West Virginia’s fourth win of the match after he defeated No. 21 DJ Parker by decision, 11-5.

In the 197-pound match, redshirt sophomore Ian Bush beat Bradley Hill by major decision, 14-5. This win locked up the upset for the Mountaineers.

Fifth-year Michael Wolfgram earned the win in the final match by sudden victory, 8-5.
