Mountaineers Up to No. 8 in NSCAA Poll
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 8, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is up four spots to No. 8 in today’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America Poll.
The Mountaineers’ (5-1) move follows a two-win weekend which saw the team upset then-No. 5/7 Penn State, 1-0, on Sept. 4, before defeating Villanova, 8-0, on Sept. 6.
Today’s ranking is the squad’s highest since its No. 7 position at the onset of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. WVU did not crack the top 10 last year until it was ranked No. 9 on Nov. 4.
Virginia (4-0-1) continues to rank No. 1. Stanford (4-0) is No. 2, with Florida State (4-2) following at No. 3, North Carolina (5-0-1) at No. 4 and BYU (4-1) at No. 5.
Texas A&M (5-1) and PSU (3-1-1) sit at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, and Auburn (6-0) and Florida (5-1) follow WVU at No. 9 and No. 10.
The Mountaineers again are the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team. Texas Tech (3-1-1) ranks No. 18. Ohio State (4-0-1), WVU’s next opponent, checks in at No. 15.
Today’s ranking follows the team’s No. 5 ranking in yesterday’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll, WVU’s second-highest ranking in any poll in the program’s 20-year history.
The Mountaineers return to the road for a match against the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Sept. 11, with first kick from Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium set for 7 p.m.
WVU then faces Longwood at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. The team will host a clinic for kids 13 and under at the recreational field just outside the stadium’s main gate. It also is “Camper Reunion Day,” with free admission for those who wear their 2015 camp t-shirt. Additionally, kids under 13 who bring a completed Musket Coloring Sheet to the DDSS gate will receive one free youth admission and will be entered into a drawing to win a plush Musket toy.
