FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 10, 2024) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell, 3-1, at No. 12 TCU inside Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday night.
Despite West Virginia (9-3-2, 5-1-1 Big 12) getting on the board first with a beautiful goal from junior forward Taylor White, the Horned Frogs responded with three consecutive tallies to secure the win. The loss marked the Mountaineers’ first in Big 12 Conference play this season.
The score line in the first half finished how it started, despite 10 shots between the two teams in the first 45 minutes. The Mountaineers started knocking early, but it was TCU that had the best look of the half. In the final two minutes, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Smith was called on to make her first save of the match, keeping the contest scoreless at the break.
Out of the locker room, WVU came out firing and got on the board first in the 52nd minute. An excellent ball from senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran found White in the box, as a quick touch from the Cincinnati, Ohio, native put the Mountaineers ahead.
Unfortunately, the Horned Frogs responded immediately, tying it up just after the ensuing kickoff. From there, TCU added two more in the 58th and 71st minutes to seal the victory over the Mountaineers.
The final box score showed a dominant performance from the Horned Frogs, who outshot West Virginia, 21-7, including 6-3 in shots on goal. White and Heredia-Beltran led West Virginia’s offensive efforts with a pair of shots apiece. White’s goal marked her fifth of the season, as well as her first since the Big 12 opener at Cincinnati on Sept. 12.
With the loss, WVU moves to 10-5-3 all-time against the Horned Frogs, including 3-2-2 in matches played in Fort Worth. Of note, the falter ends a nine-match unbeaten streak for the Mountaineers, while it is their first loss since Aug. 29, at then-No. 12 Penn State.
Up next, West Virginia concludes its road swing at Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 13. Kickoff at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
