MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 7, 2024) – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team caps its nonconference slate, as well as a three-game homestand, when it welcomes Liberty to Morgantown on Sunday, Sept. 8. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Sunday’s match is WVU’s Camper Reunion and Youth Soccer Day. The Mountaineers will host a post-match clinic for youth 12 and under, and there also will be postgame autographs open to all fans.

Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com or calling 1-800-WVU GAME. When purchasing online, tickets are $6 each. Any remaining tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors at the stadium ticket window on match day.

WVU student tickets also will be made available at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The office, as well as the stadium gates, opens at 12 p.m., on game day. WVU students are admitted for free with a valid WVU Student I.D.

Andrew Caridi and Adam Zundell have the call of Sunday’s contest on ESPN+. The game also can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown, and live stats are available at WVUsports.com.

Sunday’s match marks just the second meeting between West Virginia and Liberty. The Flames hold a 1-0 lead in the series, following a 3-1 win in the first-ever contest between the two teams on Sept. 3, 2023. In last year’s match in Lynchburg, WVU got on the board first with a 16th-minute goal from Chloe Adler, but Liberty tied it up with a PK in the 72nd minute. From there, the Flames scored two quick goals in the 87th minute to steal the 3-1 win away from the Mountaineers.

West Virginia is looking to even the all-time series when the squads meet in Morgantown for the first time on Sunday.

Last time out, WVU continued its three-game homestand and fought to a gritty, 2-0 win over JMU on Sept. 5 in Morgantown. A pair of goals from junior forward Ajanae Respass lifted West Virginia to the win. Her first score came in the 19th minute and her second in the 48th. Sophomore defender Olivia Shertzer and junior forward Taylor White were credited with assists on the scores.

A second-half red card for starting goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth forced WVU to finish out the match with 10 players. From there, the West Virginia defense stepped up to the call and played a tough match to earn its fourth shutout of the year. In the final box score, West Virginia outshot James Madison, 13-6, including 6-1 in shots on goal.

Respass is pacing the West Virginia offense following her two-goal performance with four goals, three assists and 11 points. In the Big 12 Conference, Respass ranks third in the league in total assists and fourth in assists per game (0.50). Senior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran and Respass rank second in the conference with a pair of game-winning goals this season.

Lang Wedemeyer is in his eighth season as the head coach at Liberty, compiling an overall record of 85-42-16 during his time in Lynchburg. The Flames are 7-0 so far in 2024, coming off a 2-1 win over No. 21 Virginia Tech on Sept. 5.

Halle Engle leads the Flames with three goals on the year, while Sallie Garner and Elise Graf have three assists so far this season. Peyton Huber and Grace Workman have split Liberty’s goalkeeping duties this season, putting together a combined save percentage of 0.773 and goals-against average of 0.71.
