MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 7, 2023) – In a mother-daughter matchup between Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown and Auburn senior Sammie Brown, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against the Tigers on Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.

The two teams were scoreless after the first half, but the Mountaineers (2-4-1) got on the board early in the second half to take the lead. It didn’t take Auburn long to draw even and force the two teams to battle for a game winner until the final buzzer.

Sophomore forward Taylor White found the back of the net for WVU, tallying her fourth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. She got her toe on a ball that rebounded off a saved shot from senior forward/midfielder Chloe Adler, who was credited with her first assist of the year. From there, West Virginia fought to keep its lead but Auburn managed to gain one back, equalizing at the 66:08 mark for the final result.

Auburn led the Mountaineers in shots, 11-7, and corner kicks, 6-3, while the teams were level with five shots on goal apiece. White led the WVU attack with the goal and a pair of shots, while fifth-year senior goalkeeper grabbed four saves in the contest.

With the draw, the series against the Tigers remains tied, moving to 1-1-2 all time. Of note, Izzo-Brown and daughter Sammie competed against one another for the second time Thursday night, as Sammie returned to her hometown to play in a collegiate soccer game for the first time in her career.

West Virginia now looks ahead to completing the nonconference portion of its schedule when it welcomes Villanova to Morgantown on Sunday, Sept. 10. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is tabbed for 1 p.m. ET. It’s Youth Soccer Day, and the Mountaineers will offer a postgame youth clinic to young fans in attendance following the match.
