Lyons Unveils 2015-16 Schedule
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 28, 2015) – Highlighted by three home tournaments and seven dual matches against opponents ranked in the top 40 last season, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons unveiled the 2015-16 women’s tennis schedule, on Friday afternoon.
“It’s nice to play at home and have teams come here and participate in our home events,” said third-year women’s tennis coach Miha Lisac. “I think we’re going to have a nice mix of tournaments throughout the fall semester. We are competing against solid competition, and that is always a good thing heading into the spring semester and Big 12 play.
“We have exciting promotions taking place at our fall invites, so that is something to look forward too. We are pumped to kick off the 2015-16 season.”
In his third season at the helm, coach Lisac and the Mountaineers are slated to compete in five fall tournaments.
WVU opens its fall season against Eastern Michigan and Morehead State at home with the Mountaineer Invitational from Sept. 18-20. Following each day of the tournament, the Mountaineers’ will host a meet and greet with a chance for autographs from players and coaches.
The following weekend, the Mountaineers host their second annual WVU Pink Invitational from Sept. 25-27. In support of breast cancer awareness, WVU will showcase pink jerseys as the team squares off against Toledo, Buffalo, Wright State and Maryland.
West Virginia travels to Akron, Ohio, to face host Akron, Cornell and UMKC in the Akron Invitational from Oct. 2-4. Following a week off from competition, the Mountaineers travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals from Oct. 15-19.
To close out the fall season, WVU hosts James Madison and Duquesne at the Martha Thorn Invite from Oct. 23-25 in honor of former WVU tennis coach Martha Thorn. Thorn was a vital part in building the foundation of the women’s tennis program at WVU, where she held the reigns for 26 years and posted an overall record of 315-227-1.
“The fall season sets the foundation for what’s to come in January,” Lisac noted. “We use the fall semester to prepare from a technical and conditioning standpoint for the upcoming dual match season.”
WVU opens its spring season at Pitt, on Jan. 23, for the second consecutive year. The Mountaineers return home for a doubleheader event against Toledo and Cleveland State on Jan. 29.
All home matches will be held at Ridgeview Racquet Club until weather permits outdoor play.
West Virginia hits the road for three non-conference matches against Akron on Feb. 7, followed by Liberty on Feb. 12 and Virginia Tech on Feb. 14.
On Feb. 21, the Mountaineers take on James Madison for a neutral site match at the Greenbrier in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
West Virginia continues its non-conference slate on the road with matches against Cornell on Feb. 27, followed by matches with Maryland on March 5 and in-state foe Marshall on March 11.
“We are very excited about the Big 12 opponents that are coming here, and we are excited about the new rules that are being implemented in Big 12 play,” Lisac explained. “During my first two years here, we started in a place where we had a lot of work to do to catch up, and now, we are getting to the point where we are able to capitalize on the opportunities given to us in every single match. We are getting to the point where we are capable of winning Big 12 matches.”
Big 12 Conference play starts with a swing through Oklahoma, as the squad faces Oklahoma State on March 19, followed by a trip to Oklahoma on March 20.
WVU returns home to take on Iowa State on March 26, followed by matches against Kansas on April 8 and Kansas State on April 10.
The Mountaineers continue Big 12 play on the road against Texas on April 16, followed by a trip to Waco, Texas, for a match at Baylor on April 17.

WVU returns to the Mountaineer Tennis Courts on April 22 and April 24 to close its regular season against TCU and Texas Tech before traveling to Oklahoma State on April 28 for the 2016 Big 12 Tennis Championship.
The 2016 Big 12 Tennis Championship begins with the first round of play on April 28, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and final following on April 29, April 30 and May 1. All matches will be played at the Greenwood Tennis Center, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
