According to the Washington Post, West Virginia will lose $73.2 M in sports this year. Is this right? I thought the program was self sufficient.

You're looking at the wrong table in the article. The $73.2mil is the 2014 revenue over the 2004 revenue. Scroll down to see the 2014 loss of $3.4mil, which I believe was already released earlier this year by AD Lyons. Increased portions of B12 revenue and other one-time expenses will cancel it out for 2015.

It absolutely kills me how reading comprehension and a simple analysis of financial graphics have become do moronic for many people. The chart shows schools' revenues with and without a deficit...NOT the total deficit which was not reported. Our revenues have increased but we carried over a deficit from our exit from the Big East plus some major infrastructure improvements which will be totally funded. On the books, we may have a small deficit of around $5mm but that will be gone this year. No way we are $72mm in the hole!

Correction... the total deficit was reported if you scroll down... $3.4mm but that is really temporary. We increased revenue by nearly $30mm from one year to the next. I'm OK with that progress.

The paperboy lecturing about civility!?! LMAO!

i think i handle it well.

when people start hurling personal insults or mean spirited gibberish, i put them on ignore for a few months...longer if they aren't the least bit funny. i do appreciate humor.

back you go.

$3.2 million deficit but it's paperwork. The increased income from the Big 12, which goes up again next year, will easily wipe that out. It wasn't that long ago that the WVU athletic revenues were about $50 million, and Rich Rodriguez couldn't get the improvements he wanted (which Oliver Luck came up with after Rich left). Now they're above $70 million and will hit $80 million next year with the increased Big 12 payout.

I'd say WVU is doing something right in the athletic department.

Plus, the Mountaineer Field scoreboards, north and south, are being used more effectively to give Big 12 scores and others of interest to WVU fans, statistics, even video clips of plays from other Big 12 games.

WVU has come a LONG way in the past decade in facilities.

Now, let's concentrate on beating Iowa State and Kansas State and our bowl opponent, which might be in Memphis or Orlando, I'm GUESSING.

M ighty defense throttled Georgia Southern, 44-0

O utstanding defense obliterated Liberty, 41-17

U nilaterally decimated Maryland, 45-6, on defense and offense

N oxious offense & special teams against Oklahoma, 44-24

T urnovers lose to Oklahoma State, 33-26 in OT despite impressive comeback from 15-point deficit.

A wesome Baylor too much, 62-38.

I ncinerated by TCU, 40-10. Way too many mistakes, penalties, dropped passes.

N ifty rushing, defense take down Texas Tech, 31-26

E xcellent turnovers by defense against Texas, 38-20

E rectile dysfunctioned Kansas, 49-0

R oll past Iowa State

S lap down Kansas State

"Actually the athletic department's official and twice-audited financial report for 2014 showed a profit of just over $1 million - $1,008,568 to be exact."

Low information fans and trolls might not know the differences between profits and revenue, but that shouldn't diminish the excellent free and open advice that they have been providing through the years on our special board.
