WVU Scores Early, Often in Win over JMU
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 11, 2015) – For the second time this season, the West Virginia University men’s soccer team responded to a 1-0 loss with a six goal showing the following match.
Friday, the result was a 6-2 victory over James Madison at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers (2-3) jumped out with two goals in the first 2:14, thanks to an early red card on the JMU goaltender, and never looked back.
“It was important for the confidence,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “We changed some things up this week in terms of our approach. It’s good to see it come out, and it took a minute and ten seconds for us to show it. It was a good performance overall from the guys. There was still some things I would like to see us do better, but we will take the win and move on.”
WVU played nearly the entire game with a man advantage after the JMU goaltender received a red card in the box at 1:07. Kyle Morton went out to play a ball in the box, but collided with a West Virginia attacker to earn the card and give the Mountaineers a penalty kick.
Sophomore Jad Arslan took advantage on the PK to put WVU ahead, 1-0. One minute and seven seconds later, senior Ryan Cain netted his first goal of the game on a shot inside the box on the right side to put give West Virginia a 2-0 lead.
“We slipped the ball behind them pretty early and the keeper took a chance,” LeBlanc said of the red card. “We knew we could get behind their back four with our pace, unfortunately for them, it was a bit of a challenge. By the word of the law he has to get a PK, and we hate to see that double jeopardy in soccer. Double jeopardy is a tough way to go, but it is the rule, and he has to be sent off for it. Credit to our guys for playing the first ball.”
In the 11th minute, JMU got to within one with a goal that bounced off of WVU goaltender Daniel Diaz. West Virginia responded right back though, with a goal by Ryan Cain just 48 seconds later.
At 11:18, Cain faked left, then right, and dribbled past the goaltender before scoring with his right foot. Senior Zak Leedom and sophomore Jad Arslan earned assists on the goal.
Freshman Rushawn Larmond netted his second goal of the season at 38:28 to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 lead going into halftime. Larmond collected a long pass from freshman Tucker Stephenson outside the box and buried the ball in the right side of the net.
After intermission, freshman Alec Boerner came in goal for West Virginia. He recorded the first two saves of his career in his third appearance of the season.
Junior Jack Elliott gave the Mountaineers a 5-1 edge at 55:00 when he scored his first goal of the year. Elliott scored on a header right outside the goal off a corner kick from sophomore Joey Piatczyc.
JMU scored in the 76th minute before WVU answered three minutes later. Credited as an own goal, Larmond sent a shot in off a free kick that deflected off of a James Madison defender into the back of the net.
The Mountaineers posted 14 shots in the game and held James Madison to five. WVU had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
In addition to the red card on Morton, Piatczyc received a yellow card in the 54th minute.
West Virginia is back on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Wright State at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
