MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 31, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team had five players reach double figures in the Mountaineers’ 89-48 victory over Shepherd in the fourth annual Haunted Hoops exhibition game presented by Coke Zero.
A spooky crowd of 2,787 attended Saturday’s contest, which featured a Trunk-or-Treat sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Engineers before the game. The attendance was the second largest since the event started in 2012.
Teana Muldrow and Katrina Pardee tied for a team-high 17 points each in the Mountaineers’ victory. Muldrow, a native of East Orange, New Jersey, went 8-of-9 from the field with seven rebounds and three blocks. The freshman Pardee connected on 6-of-9 after missing her first six shots.
Center Lanay Montgomery nearly had a triple-double after pulling in a game-high 13 rebounds, scoring 12 points and blocking seven shots in 23 minutes. Preseason All-Big 12 honoree Bria Holmes netted 16 points and four assists in 20 minutes, while freshman Alexis Brewer added 14 to round out WVU’s double figure scorers.
WVU utilized as 25-0 run at the end of the first quarter and for eight minutes in the second quarter to take a commanding 50-21 lead at the half. The Mountaineers finished shooting 47.9 percent (35-of-73) from the field and made seven three-pointers on the night. Shepherd was held to 19-of-58 overall for a 32.8 field goal percentage. WVU grabbed 53 rebounds, collected 16 steals and dished out 20 assists in the triumph.
“I thought we came out and played harder in the second quarter,” said coach Mike Carey. “We held them to four points (in the quarter). I saw some good things and a lot of things we’ve got to work on. Anytime you have 11 out of your 14 players dressing that are new, it’s going to be a work in progress.”
Shepherd’s Morgan Arden made 9-of-17 from the field for a game-high 21 points in the loss for the Rams.
Both teams performed well in the first quarter. WVU pushed its lead to 11-7 before Shepherd tied the game with a Cara Mason jumper at 1:21. Brewer’s layup and a Montgomery bucket coupled with the and-one stretched the Mountaineers edge to 22-17 at the end of the quarter.
WVU carried its five-point spurt over to the second quarter and dominated by outscoring the Rams 28-4 in the period. West Virginia completed a 25-0 run and did not allow Shepherd to score until 2:30 left in the quarter.
Montgomery registered a first half double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Pardee also inked 10 points, while Brewer followed with nine. West Virginia finished the first half shooting 45.2 percent (19-of-42), while connecting on 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from the three-point line. Shepherd was held to 33.3 percent shooting (9-of-27) and 1-of-5 behind the arc.
Holmes scored six of West Virginia’s first 13 points in the third period to push the team’s lead to 38. By the end of the quarter, five Mountaineers had reached double figures with Muldrow leading with 17 points.
Shepherd finished the contest outscoring West Virginia 14-12 in the final quarter, as the Mountaineers picked up an 89-48 victory.
West Virginia opens the regular season against Delaware State on Saturday, Nov. 14. Tipoff against the Hornets will be announced once a game time for the WVU vs. Texas football game has been determined. Admission to the season opener is free courtesy of United Bank.
