WVU Release WVU Ready to Face North Carolina in Super Regional

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 6, 2024) The West Virginia University baseball team is set to play North Carolina in the NCAA Super Regional at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. The best-of-three series gets started on Friday, June 7, at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game will be at 8 p.m. while Sunday’s if necessary game three will start at 3 p.m.



The whole series will air on ESPN2 with Mike Monaco and Kyle Peterson on the call and can be heard on the Mountaineer Sports Network with Andrew Caridi and Jake Weghorst on all radio affiliates as well as the Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.



The Mountaineers earned their right to play this weekend after sweeping through the Tucson Regional a week ago, defeating Dallas Baptist and Grand Canyon twice. The Tar Heels are the No. 4 national seed and won the Chapel Hill regional by defeating LSU in extra innings in game seven.



Overall, West Virginia is 36-22 this season and will be making its first super regional appearance in program history.



Senior Derek Clark was named Most Outstanding Player of the Tucson Regional after throwing a complete game against Dallas Baptist in the opener and closing out the clincher with the final two outs against GCU. He will get the start on Fridayagainst UNC’s Shea Sprague.



Junior JJ Wetherholt leads the team with a .345 batting average while hitting eight home runs and driving in 30 runs. Senior Reed Chumley has a team-high 15 home runs, 15 doubles, and 48 RBI.



Led by head coach Scott Forbes, North Carolina is 45-14 this season including a 35-3 record home this season.



Vance Honeycutt is hitting .309 with a team-high 24 home runs and 28 stolen bases. The centerfielder was also named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.



Starting pitcher Shea Sprague was named Second Team All-ACC and is 3-1 with 3.76 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 69.1 innings pitched.
