LOS ANGELES (Sept. 10, 2024) In a rematch of the 2023 NCAA quarterfinals, the No. 1 West Virginia University men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw at Loyola Marymount, Tuesday evening at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles. The Mountaineers go to 4-0-1 on the season while the Lions are now 1-3-1.

West Virginia was in control nearly the entire game as it outshot LMU, 25-2, and had possession of the ball for 67% of the contest. The Mountaineers also had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Graduate student Simon Carlson led WVU with eight shots while Sergio Ors Navarro had four. Overall, 12 Mountaineers registered at least one shot.

Redshirt senior Marc Bonnaire only needed to make one save in goal to collect his third shutout of the season.

The best shot for the Mountaineers came in the 29th minute when Carlson took a free kick just outside the top of the box. His shot was headed for the corner of the net, but the LMU goalkeeper made a diving save.

West Virginia sent the ball into the box on numerous occasions throughout the night but could not get many clean shots off as just five ended up on target in the contest.

The Mountaineers will return home for their next match on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against UNC Greensboro. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
