“One of the neat things about the MAC is that there’s no predetermined site,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said of the conference tournament. “The [conference championship] host is the winner of the regular season. This year, we get the benefit of playing three of our MAC games at home and two of them on the road, so the idea is to take maximum points from your home games.
“Western Michigan is doing pretty well. They’re a good team, well-coached and they’re winning games. Even though we do have some non-conference games intertwined, the idea is that you try and win your conference game-by-game.”
WVU is among the conference and national leaders in several categories. The Mountaineers are first in the Mid-American Conference and No. 19 nationally with 6.10 points per game and eighth nationally, third in the MAC with 2.30 assists per game. West Virginia is No. 10 in the country and third in the conference with 23 total assists.
Individually, sophomore Joey Piatczyc continues to lead the nation in assists. He is averaging 1.00 assist per game and is also first with 10 total assists. Senior Zak Leedom is seventh in the MAC with four total assists and eighth with 0.40 assists per game. Freshman Tucker Stephenson’s two game-winning goals rank fourth in the conference, while senior Ryan Cain is fifth in the league with five goals and ninth, along with Piatczyc, with 10 total points.
