Texas and Oklahoma will always have a edge. In another year Texas will be Texas again. They played a lot of frosh. TCU and Baylor have something going. They have very good coaches. They also have access to that Texas talent. WVU is on the same level as OSU, imo. I believe if you can win 9 games a year at WVU you have accomplished something solid. There is no instate talent here. A few players here and there but not many and the best one usually leaves the state. WVU fans need to be realistic with themselves. When I was younger I was blinded by some of these facts as well.
There's truth to a certain point here. But WVU has built up a terrific pedigree in the eyes of other fans around the country. And this business of it being hard to recruit to WVU is getting old. Like Nehlen said when he first got here yes, it was difficult. WVU was in a scraggly looking town with no facilities to speak of.
The thing is, WVU is surrounded by talent rich states that many other programs are not, like Iowa St for example. The athletes in these surrounding states already know about WVU. We don't have to educate them on that aspect. That's a big difference. Plus, we have already won here and many times. WVU went 11-0 with VT, Miami and a good BC team on the schedule as well as some others. Nehlen's schedules weren't that easy though it's the toughest now I believe but it's not "undoable."
I don't believe TCU and Baylor will stay up there consistently for good like OU and UT have been over the decades. They're not blue bloods. Plus, UT has already fallen and not too far removed from a nat'l title.
The real point is WVU doesn't have to go 12-0 or win the nat't title to be successful. But we'll know it when we see it. And the right coach has to be picked when we need one. Look at Nebraska, they're not, not winning because they don't have history or facilities or fan support, they've got all of that, they're a blue blood but they can't win because they keep hiring the wrong coach for some reason.
It starts with the man at the top. We have the rest of the ingredients that's good enough to win with. Anyone who says otherwise is conning you.
There's plenty of other programs out there that would love to have had the history we have had and some of the great victories we've had just since 1980. I've talked to those people and seen the looks on their faces. People respect our program. The athletic side is doing fine. We have to work on the academics and the campus itself, which it appears is what's happening. But that kind of thing takes time.
