-West Virginia held its third 30-minute open session for the media and today the rotation was a little different because after the team broke from the huddle the individual position groups did various drills.
-The quarterbacks lined up on the far end of the practice field and continued to work on footwork and throwing into the new. Senior quarterback Skyler Howard once again threw the ball accurately and had the look of somebody that wasn’t going through his first rodeo. Also felt that redshirt freshman Chris Chugunov threw the ball well during this portion of the drills. Today redshirt sophomore Will Grier wasn’t as accurate as he was on the first day but once again he physically just has a different look to him and has a strong arm to boot.
-West Virginia was in a two-minute type situation drill and the first teams on both sides looked like this: QB: Skyler Howard, RB Kennedy McKoy, Z Ka’Raun White, IR Jovon Durante and IR Daikiel Shorts, X Shelton Gibson/Gary Jennings, LT: Yodny Cajuste, LG Adam Pankey, C Tyler Orlosky, RG Kyle Bosch, RT Colton McKivitz.
The defense looked to be more in nickel look and was: DL Noble Nwachukwu, Darrien Howard, Jon Lewis, LB Justin Arndt, S/LB: Kyzir White, S: Toyous Avery, CBs: Rasul Douglas and Antonio Crawford playing cornerback out wide with Maurice Fleming as the nickel and Dravon Henry lining up at free safety and Jarrod Harper at bandit.
On that series, First was an incompletion to Gibson then Howard took a “sack,” then found Ka’Raun White for a nice chunk of yards and then Gary Jennings dropped the ball on a wide open slant before the second team took the field.
-The second team unit QB: Chris Chugunov, RB: Justin Crawford, WR: Z Marcus Simms, IR Steven Smothers, IR Devonte Mathis, Z Gary Jennings, LT Sylvester Townes, LG Grant Lingafelter, C Matt Jones, RG Rob Dowdy, RT Marcell Lazard
Second team defense was: DE Reese Donahue, NG Christian Brown, DE Jeffery Pooler, LB: SAM Xavier Preston, MIKE Brendan Ferns, WILL David Long, SPUR: Dylan Tonkery, CB: Nana Kyeremeh, FS Khairi Shariff, CB Elijah Battle and Mike Daniels
-On that series Justin Crawford took a hand-off for a few yards off the left side and then the drops continued as Chugunov misfired and threw the ball behind Simms but it his chest. The offense then had a false start and Chugunov was “sacked,” by Reese Donahue. On the final play of the scrimmage Gary Jennings dropped another pass that drew an irate reaction from Dana Holgorsen.
-Today in red jerseys were safety Jeremy Tyler and running back Martell Pettaway. Also saw redshirt junior defensive end Xavier Pegues around the facility walking again.
-Defensive line coach Bruce Tall really asks a lot about of his players and it’s fun watching him instruct them. “Open it up go across the block,” he kept repeating as he was teaching his players.
-It’s not surprising but Kyzir White and Brendan Ferns just have a different look than most newcomers in the program. Both look to be very physical options and look like they could contribute right away.
