MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —Freshman Jovon Durante scored a touchdown the first time he touched the ball in his first collegiate game at West Virginia.
Rising high school senior and incoming WVU recruit Steven Smothers said he believes he'll have the same opportunity next season.
And with good reason.
Durante is the second true freshman receiver to start at WVU since 2013. Junior Daikiel Shorts also started as a freshman.
Welcome to Wide Receiver U.
The Mountaineers under coach Dana Holgorsen have sent four wide receivers to the NFL Draft since 2012, the most of any school in the country over that span.
Kevin White was the No. 7 overall pick in 2015, and Tavon Austin was selected No. 8 overall in 2013.
“I'm looking for fast, big, strong, agile and athletic guys who can make plays,” Holgorsen said.
“We have a couple of guys who are playing on Sundays right now. We need to keep going forward when it comes to being able to have that to offer recruits.”
Holgorsen's pitch resonated with Smothers, a four-star recruit who selected WVU over Alabama, Nebraska, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State.

WVU's “Air Raid” offense convinced Smothers, who committed to the Mountaineers in August shortly after attending a July camp in Morgantown with other 2016 WVU recruits.
