MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (July 17, 2024) Senior Hayden Cooper of the West Virginia University baseball team has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Mets.

Cooper is the sixth Mountaineer to either be drafted or selected in free agency by an MLB team this week, joining draftees JJ Wetherholt (No. 7, Cardinals), David Hagaman (No. 133, Rangers), Aidan Major (No. 146, Guardians), Derek Clark (No. 262, Angels), and Tyler Switalski (Giants, No. 478).

In his one year with WVU, Cooper made 17 appearances on the mound with eight starts, going 1-4 with a 6.40 ERA. He struck out 32 batters in 52.0 innings pitched.

Cooper is the first Mountaineer to start his professional career with the Mets since Grant Psomas was drafted in the 15th round by New York in 2004.
