GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 2, 2025) The West Virginia University baseball team tallied its 11th straight win to begin the season on Sunday with an 11-1 victory over Queens (N.C.) at First National Bank Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.

It is the fourth best start to a season in program history and best since starting 18-0 in 1964. It is also the longest winning streak for the Mountaineers since 11 straight victories in 2008. West Virginia is one of just eight undefeated teams remaining in the 2025 season.

Senior Grant Hussey had three hits on the day including a home run while driving in three runs. Senior Brodie Kresser added his first home run of the season as part of a two-hit day. Senior Jace Rinehart collected three RBI while junior Sam White knocked in a pair.

Junior Gavin Van Kempen earned the win by allowing just one run in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts. Senior Reese Bassinger, freshman Bryant Yoak, sophomore Joe Fredericks, and sophomore Aidan Smith each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game. Overall, the Royals managed just three hits on the day.

For the third straight game, Queens took an early lead, jumping out in front with a run in the second inning. Hussey evened up the game in the fifth with a leadoff home run, the 39th of his career. A few batters later, White drove in Kresser with a single to put WVU on top.

After a sacrifice fly from White in the seventh, Rinehart blew the game open with a three-run double. Freshman Gavin Kelly added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make it 7-1.

Kresser homered in the eighth, his eighth hit of the weekend. Three runs in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to redshirt-freshman Alex Marot and a two-run single from Hussey were the finishing touches of the victory.

The Mountaineers will look for the four-game sweep on Monday at The Stick Williams Dream Fields in Charlotte. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
