FORT WORTH, Texas (May 17, 2024) The West Virginia University baseball team defeated TCU, 7-2, Friday evening at Lupton Stadium to even up the series at a game apiece. The Mountaineers improve to 32-20 overall and 18-11 in the Big 12 while the Horned Frogs fall to 31-18 and 14-15 in conference play.

Junior JJ Wetherholt had his first career multi-home run game as he hit a pair of two-run shots in the contest. His first home run was also the 200th hit of his career, becoming just the 22nd player in program history to reach the milestone and only the sixth to accomplish it in three years.

Juniors Grant Hussey and Brodie Kresser also hit home runs on the night for the Mountaineers to provide all the scoring in the contest. As a team, West Virginia has hit 85 home runs this season, setting a new program record, surpassing the mark of 81 set just last year.

On the mound, senior Derek Clark, the reigning Big 12 Pitcher and Newcomer of the Week, was stellar once again as he went eight innings while allowing just two runs and striking out six.

Wetherholt got the scoring started for the Mountaineers in the third with a two-run home run the other way. Hussey added a two-run homer of his own a few batters later, his 12th of the season and 37th of his career, extending the WVU program record.

In the fourth, Wetherholt went deep again with another two-run home run, this time pulling it to right-center field. He now has eight home runs on the season and five in his last six games.

TCU got on the board with two runs in the fourth, but that was all that Clark would allow on the night as he improved to 7-2 on the season.

Kresser provided the final insurance with a solo home run in the sixth inning, his fourth long ball of the year.

The Mountaineers will look to take the series on Saturday in the final game of the regular season. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ET.
