MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 26, 2025) – The West Virginia University baseball team won its home opener against Ohio, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers remain undefeated at 8-0 while the Bobcats fall to 1-6.
It is the best start to a season for West Virginia since beginning 18-0 in 1964 and just the fifth time in program history opening the season with at least eight straight wins.
Senior Grant Hussey went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season while junior Logan Sauve went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Senior Kyle West added two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore Armani Guzman had two hits and two runs scored.
The Mountaineers used eight pitchers in the game with junior Luke Lyman, freshman David Hagen, freshman Bryson Hoff, freshman Benjamin Hudson, and senior Tyler Hutson all putting up zeroes. Freshman Mac Stiffler got the start and struck out two in 3.1 innings.
West Virginia got off to a fast start with four straight hits to begin the game, including an RBI double from junior Sam White and a two-run double by West. Sophomore Michael Perazza added a run in the third with an RBI single.
The Bobcats got on the board with two runs in the fourth before the Mountaineers got one back in the home half on a single by Sauve.
Hussey hit the 38th home run of his career in the sixth inning, extending his all-time program record. Sauve added another run later in the inning with an RBI double. A sacrifice fly by senior Brodie Kresser in the eighth capped the scoring for the Mountaineers on the day.
Ohio threatened with bases loaded and nobody out in the eighth inning before Hutson came out of the pen and allowed just one run to score, squashing the Bobcat rally.
Of note, the announced attendance of 2,505 fans at the ballpark set a new record for a home opener at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
West Virginia will be back on the road this weekend when they head to North Carolina to take on Queens. It is a four-game series running Friday through Monday. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. from Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.
