MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 15, 2025) – The West Virginia University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Jacksonville, Saturday, at John Sessions Stadium. The Mountaineers claimed game one, 10-3, before winning a tight battle, 3-2.
West Virginia improves to 3-0 for the just the second time in the last 13 seasons.
In game one, junior Skylar King had three hits, including a triple, and three RBI. Senior Brodie Kresser added three hits and two runs scored while junior Logan Sauve had two hits, two runs, and two RBI.
Junior Carson Estridge earned the win in relief with 4.2 scoreless innings while striking out four. Junior Robby Porco got the start and struck out four in 3.2 innings while allowing two runs, only one earned.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mountaineers jumped in front with a six-run second. King tripled home two runs to give WVU the lead before Kresser and Sauve had RBI singles. After a run-scoring groundout from junior Sam White, redshirt-freshman Alex Marot capped the inning with his first career hit and RBI.
Jacksonville chipped away with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before the Mountaineers pulled away with a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Senior Grant Hussey had a sacrifice fly while King, Sauve, and freshman Jorge Valdes all drove in runs with singles.
In the second game, King had the only two hits of the game for WVU, including his first home run of the season.
Jacksonville hit a home run in the second inning to take its first lead of the series. Hussey evened up the game for the Mountaineers in the fourth with a run-scoring groundout.
King followed with the biggest hit of the day, a two-run home run, the first round-tripper for the Mountaineers this season.
Junior Gavin Van Kempen struck out six in 4.0 innings while allowing just one run to earn the win. Senior Reese Bassinger closed out the game with 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out four and earned his second save in as many days.
The Mountaineers and Dolphins will close out the four-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
