WVU Release WVU Baseball - Mountaineers Head to TCU to Close Out Regular Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 15, 2024) The West Virginia University baseball team heads to TCU for the final series of the regular season, May 16-18. First pitch on Thursday is set for 7 p.m. ET, Friday for 7:30 p.m. ET, and Saturday for 5 p.m. ET.



All three games will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Mountaineers Sports Network on all radio affiliates as well as the Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.



The Mountaineers have already clinched their spot in next week’s Big 12 Baseball Championship in Arlington, Texas and currently sit in third place at 17-10 in conference play, just a half game behind Oklahoma State for second. The top two seeds will receive a first-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament.



Overall, WVU is 31-19 after taking two of three against Kansas State in its final home series of the season. After dropping Friday’s contest, the Mountaineers outscored the Wildcats 25-5 in the next two games to take the series.



Senior Derek Clark earned Big 12 Pitcher and Newcomer of the Week honors after striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings against Kansas State. It was the second time he earned both awards this season.



Junior JJ Wetherholt leads the team with a .384 batting average while senior Reed Chumley has a team-high 14 home runs and 40 RBI. Along with Chumley, sophomore Sam White, junior Kyle West, and junior Grant Hussey have all reached double-digit home runs.



TCU enters the final weekend with a 30-17 overall record and 13-14 record in the Big 12, sitting in seventh place in the standings.



Payton Tolle leads the Horned Frogs on the mound with a 6-3 record, a 2.87 ERA, and 105 strikeouts in 69.0 innings pitched. Ben Abeldt is TCU’s top reliever with a 1.07 ERA in 23 appearances.



At the plate, Logan Maxwell is hitting .349 while Luke Boyers and Kurtis Byrne each have six home runs to lead the team.
