Baseball Hosts Texas Tech in Regular-Season Finale

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 13, 2015) – The West Virginia University baseball team will close out the regular season this weekend against Big 12 foe Texas Tech from May 14-16 at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Thursday’s opener will begin at 6 p.m., Friday’s game is set for 6 p.m. and Saturday’s finale will be at 1 p.m.

There will be a postgame fireworks show courtesy of Coca-Cola on Friday. Saturday’s game has been designated as Senior Day and Kids Day. Seniors Justin Fox, Brad Johnson and Taylor Munden will be honored prior to the game, while kids 12 and under can run the bases and receive autographs following the game.

The entire series will feature a free video stream, courtesy of Coca-Cola. The game can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG with Jeff Culhane and Ernie Galusky on the call.

Additionally, fans can listen to the broadcast via the WVU Gameday App on their mobile device, as well as the TuneIn Radio App. WVUsports.com also will carry free live audio via the LeanStream Player at WVUsports.com/audio.

West Virginia (25-24, 7-12 Big 12) is currently in eighth place in the Big 12 standings and needs two wins to qualify for next week’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship. Texas Tech (29-20, 12-9 Big 12) currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings.

“They’re pretty smart kids,” coach Randy Mazey said. “I saw them in the airport on the way home after this past weekend figuring out the standings and the tiebreakers and all of that. They know what is going on. We try not to focus on it too much; we just try to focus on winning one inning at a time and one pitch at a time. I think they understand how big of a series it is.”

Mazey will send sophomore right-hander Chad Donato (6-5, 2.83 ERA) to the mound for Thursday’s opener, while the starters are to be determined for Friday and Saturday.

“I like our chances every time Chad goes out there,” Mazey said. “The one thing you know about Chad Donato is that he is going to be locked in and he is going to give you 100 percent every time he toes the mound.”

Freshman second baseman Kyle Davis continues to pace the WVU offense after notching his 23rd multi-hit game of the season on Tuesday, batting .355 with 16 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 29 RBIs, while Munden has a team-leading 11 home runs to go along with 11 doubles and 29 RBIs. Sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood and sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer have eight home runs apiece, with Wood holding the team lead in RBIs at 32.

Texas Tech coach Tim Tadlock is expected to start sophomore right-hander Ryan Moseley (4-5, 3.18 ERA) on Thursday and senior left-hander Cameron Smith (6-3, 2.64 ERA) on Friday. Saturday’s starter is to be determined.

Texas Tech is led at the plate by junior infielder Cory Raley, who is hitting .344 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs and 18 RBIs. Junior infielder Eric Gutierrez is batting .322 with 13 doubles, two homers and a team-leading 39 RBIs, while sophomore outfielder Stephen Smith leads the team with nine home runs.

West Virginia trails the all-time series, 2-4, and was swept last season in Lubbock.
