TUCSON, Ariz. (May 31, 2024) Behind a complete game from senior Derek Clark, the West Virginia University baseball team defeated No. 25 Dallas Baptist, 4-1, Friday afternoon to open the Tucson Regional. WVU improves to 34-22 overall this season while the Patriots fall to 44-14.

The Mountaineers advance in the winner’s bracket and will play the victor of Friday night’s Arizona/Grand Canyon game on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MST. TV network is still to be determined.

Clark was masterful on the mound as he went the distance for the fourth time this season on just 101 pitches. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking none.

At the plate, sophomore Logan Sauve had the biggest hit of the game, a three-run home run in the third inning to dead center field over the batter’s eye. Senior Reed Chumley had two hits and an RBI while sophomore Sam White added two hits, giving him 10 in four career games in Tucson.

From first pitch, Clark was rolling as he retired the first seven batters of the game. After Sauve put the Mountaineers in front in the top of the third, the first baserunners got on for the Patriots, but the inning ended with a pickoff at first.

In the sixth, the first three batters reached for the Mountaineers, culminating with an RBI double from Chumley to put WVU up 4-0.

DBU put runners on second and third with nobody out in the eighth but only managed a sacrifice fly against Clark in the inning. In the ninth, the Patriots went down in order.
