WVU and Texas Tech Meet in First Round

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 5, 2015) - The No. 7-seeded West Virginia University women's basketball team takes on No. 10-seed Texas Tech in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Championship on Friday, March 6. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Friday's game airs on Fox College Sports Central. Fans in Morgantown can watch on Comcast 172. Satellite listings were unavailable. Jeff Culhane and Meg Bulger will call the action on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. Listen on various affiliates across the state, online at WVUsports.com/audio or via the TuneIn Radio app.

West Virginia (17-13, 7-11 Big 12) fell 59-55 at Kansas State to close out the regular season. Bria Holmes paced the Mountaineers with 17 points, while Averee Fields had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Both Holmes and Fields were honored when the Phillips 66 Big 12 Awards were announced on Wednesday. Holmes, who ranked second in the league with 19.2 points per game, garnered unanimous All-Big 12 First Team recognition for the second straight year. She joins Liz Repella (2010-11) and Rosemary Kosiorek (1990-92) to achieve first team honors in back-to-back years.

Fields ranked sixth in the Big 12 with 6.7 rebounds and ninth in scoring with 13.1 points. She was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention by the league's coaches.

WVU remains the top shot blocking team in the Big 12 and fourth in the NCAA, deflecting 6.6 blocks per game. With her six blocks at K-State on Tuesday, Lanay Montgomery joined WVU legend Georgeann Wells as the only two players to block 100 or more shots during a season. Montgomery's 104 blocks ranks fourth all-time in a single-season. West Virginia is fourth in the league with a +4.4 rebounding margin.

The Mountaineers and Texas Tech meet for the seventh time on Friday with TTU holding a 4-2 edge in the series. The Lady Raiders swept the season series with a 55-45 win in Morgantown (January 14) and a 73-57 victory in Lubbock (January 28). In the two prior meetings, TTU shot 43 percent and limited WVU to 33 percent. All-Big 12 First Team selection Amber Battle boasted 26.5 points in the pair of contests.

"It's a new season," said coach Mike Carey. "We've got to go deep in the tournament to have a chance (to advance to the NCAA Tournament). We'll see what we're made of."

Texas Tech (15-15, 5-13 Big 12) has lost five consecutive games since February 18. The Lady Raiders score an average of 58.9 points, while surrendering 59.3 per game. Battle is the team's top player with 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Winner of Friday's contest will take on No. 2-seed Oklahoma in the quarterfinal round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. ET.
