WVU Advances Two to the Grand Finals at Big 12’s
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 16, 2015) – The West Virginia University rowing squad advanced two crews to the Grand Finals at the two-day 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four advanced to the Grand Finals on Sunday, May 17, after its heats on Melton Hill Lake, Saturday afternoon.
“The First Varsity Four was moving very well these past couple weeks, and they showed it today with executing a solid and fluid race,” said assistant coach Stacey Van Order. “Their start wasn’t as strong as their opponents, but they didn’t let that bring them down.”
In the First Varsity Four event, the Mountaineers crossed the line in 7:37.00 to place third in heat two, only four seconds behind Kansas’ crew. WVU advanced to the Grand Final tomorrow, and will race against Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Alabama for a chance to win first place in the First Varsity Four.
“The First Varsity Four crew chipped away at Kansas State quickly and held strong with Kansas. At 500 meters to go, they started to reel Kansas back in,” Van Order stated. “The push wasn’t quite strong enough, but they solidified a spot in the Grand Final. It’s been their goal since day one, and the boat has very good energy going into tomorrow. We know it will be a very tight race, but we are up for the challenge of pacing in the top three.”
In the Second Varsity Eight, West Virginia tallied a time of 6:54.45 to place third in heat one, just seven seconds shy of Tennessee’s boat. The Mountaineers advanced to the Grand Final tomorrow, and will take on against Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State for a chance to win first place in the Second Varsity Eight.
The First Varsity Eight, Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four advanced to the Petite Finals in each of their events with times of 6:49.33, 7:37.99 and 7:50.46, respectively.
