West Virginia - Alabama Announce Football Series
By Mike Montoro
February 22, 2019 03:00 PM

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced today that WVU and Alabama will play a home-and-home football series beginning in 2026.

The first game will be played in Morgantown on Sept. 5, 2026, and the second game will be played in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Sept. 4, 2027.

"I would like to thank Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne for his help in putting together this SEC/Big 12 home-and-home matchup," Lyons said. "With their great tradition and history, it will be exciting to host the Crimson Tide in Morgantown, and it will provide our fans with a great trip to visit Tuscaloosa the following season. Our non-conference football scheduling and the quality of opponents we are playing continue to be second to none."

The two schools have played once before, with the Crimson Tide winning the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Aug. 30.

West Virginia has faced teams from the Southeastern Conference 53 times, and holds a 26-25-2 advantage, including a 40-14 win over Tennessee in Charlotte on Sept. 2, 2018.

The Alabama Crimson Tide and the West Virginia Mountaineers have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2026 and 2027, both schools announced on Friday.

In the first game of the series, Alabama will travel to face West Virginia at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown on Sept. 5, 2026. The Crimson Tide will then host the Mountaineers at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 4, 2027.

Barring a change to the NCAA calendar, Alabama-West Virginia contests in 2026 and 2027 will be the season-opener for both schools.

“We are pleased to be able to add another premier, non-conference opponent to our future home-and-homes with West Virginia,” said Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne. “This series gives our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans the opportunity to play in and experience outstanding on-campus matchups to open the 2026 and 2027 seasons. As we continue to build out our future schedules, we will work to include even more home-and-homes of this caliber.”

Alabama and West Virginia have met once on the gridiron, which was the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide won that contest 33-23.

Alabama, which has been highly criticized for their non-conference scheduling, has stepped up to the plate by adding series with quality opponents. The Crimson Tide recently added home-and-home series with Texas for 2022 and 2023 and with Notre Dame for 2028 and 2029.

The Crimson Tide typically open the season with a neutral-site game against another Power Five opponent. This season the face Duke in Atlanta. Bama is scheduled to play USC in Arlington, Texas, in 2020 and Miami in Atlanta in 2021.

West Virginia has been playing a nine-game conference schedule with two Power non-conference opponents most of the time. They are scheduled this way every season through 2025, which includes teams such as Missouri, NC State, Florida State, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Pitt, and Penn State.

You boys have nothing to lose playing 'bama, nobody expects you to play them to within 4 TD's....but the Herd is a different matter!

Actually, the Herd is a non matter to WVU. We've got bigger fish to fry. Enjoy getting excited about your future OOC schedules with the likes of Ohio U and Liberty.

MU- OU is always a battle, can't say the same for WVU - 'bama.

WVU is filling all future schedules with 11 P-5's and a guaranteed home gimme game. In the meantime Mooshall just keeps scheduling like they always have, a couple of play for the cash games that they know ahead of time that they are going to lose, and the usual cast of nobodies to fill out the rest of their schedule.

Yeh, James Madison, Eastern Kentucky, Towson, Indiana State, and Duquesne certainly are powerhouses. Oh wait, I think they're FCS.

Well methhead, Maybe you missed where I said the rest of our future schedules have 11 P-5's each and every year. We would welcome Mooshall to be our annual gimme home game and pay you handsomely to come in and take another ass kicking like we've dealt you in the previous 12 times our two schools have played.............. provided you ever recognize your place in the pecking order.

Brother Nick should be long gone by then. Good timing by the Old Fold & Blew, as usual.

Our OOC schedule for 2019 ain't no day at the beach!

you will be 1-3...and you would be 1-3 or maybe 0-4 against ours
NCSU and Mizzou graduated everybody and the poor Tigers may not have 22 bodies they can run out on the field this Fall. JMU is a tough I-AA to be sure but if you boys can't go 3-0 against this bunch....long season for the Mounties!

Marshall's football schedule, year in and year out, is a good example of why the NCAA separates the P-5's from the other conferences. Even if Marshall would go 12-0 in 2019 they wouldn't even be in consideration for the Access Bowl. Strength of schedule matters, and that's a concept that Marshall's AD doesn't grasp.

OUR OOC SOS will be higher than yours....MIzzou and NCSU headed right into a buzz saw! Tigers won't win a game in the SEC and 'pack won't win more than three in the ACC!

tell you what......the herd should call alabama and ask for a series...and then hold the phone a long way from your ear to hear the laughter
Since they're obviously looking for someone in a series that they'll curb stomp maybe they'd go for it!

They very well may curb stomp us but there is no shame in losing them. How's it feel to have Ohio U as the "big" game on your future schedules ?

Since you boys don't play 'em for nearly 10 years ,maybe their fortunes will reverse by then....Let's Goooo Mountainerrrssss! Saban surely will be long gone! As for Ohio U., I saw them dismantle San Diego St in their Bowl game last year and I saw the fine effort displayed by WVU in their's....I came away thinking OU 27 WVU 14!

So you arrived at comparing:

Un-ranked 7-6 San Diego State
To
20th ranked 10-3 Syracuse University

Interesting.

Syracuse was better than San Diego State, but the Orange thumped the Old Fold & Blew, and the Bobcats dominated the Aztecs, so Tony's comparison isn't outrageous. A WVU team led by Cracker Jack Ellison wasn't much better than an MAC team.

In fairness to Jack Allison, our now departed staff is to blame for his bowl game performance by not giving him enough game time during the regular season. He was thrust into a role that he obviously wasn't properly prepared for. He's a better QB than what we saw in the bowl game. From what I've read about Neal Brown I believe his backup QB's will get much more game time than Dana ever allowed.

Cracker Jack was beaten out by nobodies at Miami. He's no Will Grier, and certainly, no Dwayne Haskins.

This is a "smack board," Buzzkill. Perhaps, your skin is too thin to hang out in the Woodshed, and T-Bone/Allen's BGN circle jerk would be more to your liking. Incidentally, I have nothing against Allison. It's the delusional Old Fold & Blew morons who have acted as if Allison is the second coming of Tom Brady, who deserve to be ridiculed.

P.S. LOL at your total lack of imagination or creativity. Your posts read like you're employed by WVU, as you trash the coach who has left, and sing the praises of a guy who hasn't coached a down in a Power 5 conference. What propaganda a/k/a bullsh!t.

I fear the Bobs more this Fall than I do Boise St or Cincinnati. OU kicked the Bearcats up and down the field last year and deserved to win the game. Broncos graduated a lot of players but the blue turf is no day at the beach!

I think if you review all of my post history you will not find where I've ever trashed Dana Holgorsen other than saying he didn't have Jack Allison properly prepared for the bowl game. And you never saw me say that Allison was the second coming of Tom Brady. And I haven't exactly heaped praise on Neal Brown other than to say I like what I've seen and read about him.

Based on how easily I can trigger a high falutin Charleston law firm owner, I think you're the one who is too thin skinned to dabble around on a smack board.
